Severe storms battered Northern California killing three people and displacing about 1000 residents while warnings of another system followed. Shelters and counties mobilized as waves and floods hit the coast and Eel River Canyon causing extensive damage and evacuations.
A storm front drenched Southern California last night with nearly an inch of rain in the San Gabriel Valley. Pasadena totals reached 6.45 inches for the year, while Glendora led with 0.90 inches. The Weather Bureau forecast another front bringing rain by late tomorrow and cooler, briefly sunny conditions. Small craft advisories remain from Point Conception to the Mexican border as winds reach 20 to 30 mph.
One person died and six others were injured in a three car crash on the northbound Hollywood Freeway near Belmont Avenue. An ambulance crew responding to the scene was involved in a second crash near Alvarado Street. Traffic stalled in both directions for about an hour. Albert Rosenthal, 62, of Studio City, was killed. his wife Hannah, about 60, was critically injured.
Private detective Fred Otash was sentenced to six months in county jail for conspiring to dope a race horse at Santa Anita. Judge LeRoy Dawson set five years probation with Otash to stay away from race tracks and allowed immediate liberty on a $5,000 bond while appealing.
In Melsingen Germany Deputy judge sentenced the chief judge Wilhelm Wittmaak to three weeks in prison a $12 fine and eight months license suspension for drunken driving and allowing his children to steer the car.

Bishop was grazed by a bullet and underwent four hours of surgery. police say the group, described as five boys and two girls, carried rifles and had been terrorizing south Side districts.
In Pasadena a life or death struggle inside the Flame Room restaurant ended with two employees subduing a bandit after he bound two workers in an icebox. Harold Wenzler and Kay O Grady aided by Ronald Curtis and Ansel Racette fought off Quentin Franks, a armed robbers, until police arrived. Franks, under narcotics influence, confessed to the robbery and was booked for kidnapping and robbery after injuries from the fight.
Dr R Bernard Finch faced cross examination in Los Angeles Superior Court over his romance with Carole Tregoff and the 250000 loan he obtained to build a hospital. Prosecutor Fred Whichello pressed him on deception involving his wife and others while a Swedish maid Miss Lidholm testified on a televised appearance.
