The Soviet team canceled a two day track meet in London in protest over the arrest of Nina Ponomareva, a top discus thrower charged with shoplifting five hats. Nina fled after bail and is sought as a fugitive while a Balashov cargo ship headed toward Leningrad.
Four prisoners from San Quentin honor camp escaped during overnight checks and fled to Oregon in a single engine Cessna. The plane landed at Medford at 3 10 am and the group stole a car later found abandoned in Roseburg. The four were identified as Gerald Baucum Charles Morgan Paul Marquez and Edward Virgil.
Texas Rangers were ordered to Mansfield as a mob opposed to desegregation attacked the district attorney during a scuffle that prevented three Black students from enrolling at the white high school.
In California, Bart Caritativo won an 11th hour stay of execution for bludgeoning and stabbing a couple, while in Texas an angry crowd attacked Grady Haight during a Mansfield High School segregation order. Clinton, Tennessee meanwhile faces a contempt case tied to a segregationist protest at Clinton High School.
A night watchman flushed a burglar trying to crack a safe at 6028 East Whittier Boulevard. The man fled through a back door with about 100 dollars in cash from four cash boxes.

Radio commentator Johnny Murray aged 52 died of leukemia today at UCLA Medical Center. He hosted the daily 8 am program Johnny Murray Talks It Over on KFI and previously performed with the Max Fisher and Gus Arnheim orchestras and led Hi Jinks in the 1930s. Survived by widow Dorothy son John Anthony and daughter Pamela.
American League features Boston at home against Kansas City with key pitchers Johnson and Carey Feet in action. Washington hosts New York as Pascual seeks a win while Baltimore visits 8-6 record. National League card lists St Louis at Milwaukee under night skies, Chicago at Cincinnati, Philadelphia at Pittsburgh, Brooklyn at New York with listed starters.
In San Fernando police were called as an eight to ten year old boy on a bicycle fired a shot that narrowly missed Mrs. Jane Carter a 66 year old nursery school teacher at 14723 Morrison Street. The youth was described as well dressed and unfamiliar to the neighborhood.
About 500 prospectors swarmed across nearly 12 000 acres north of Grants New Mexico staking claims for uranium. At 10 am the government opened the area to 11 875 more acres in the Ambrosia Lake district.
Maywood authorities report two armed bandits robbed McDaniel's Market at 6135 Atlantic Blvd of 8000 dollars. The incident occurred in Maywood and is under investigation by local police with no suspects immediately named.

Police found a handwritten diary in a car containing a suicide note by Alan Adair 130, of 5809 Lexington Ave Hollywood. He had gulped 29 sleeping pills and died in an apparent self destruction while parked near Baliona Creek west of Centinela Boulevard. He left messages to his estranged wife Ann noting the time stamps and his intent to die. Adair was aged 130 and father of two, in serious condition at Santa Monica receiving hospital after being found unconscious.
District Court Judge Anthony Kupka fined Eugene Welch age 40 of Boston and Joseph Catalanotti age 52 of Watertown for racing at 110 mph. He noted there are just as many old fools on the road as young ones.
