In Chicago the Democratic convention endorsed Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee for vice president on the second ballot after a close contest with Sen. John B. Kennedy of Massachusetts. Votes shifted late as states switched, leaving Kefauver with a strong lead but short of the 686 needed.

County Supervisor Roger W. Jessup condemned the Air Force and Navy for gross carelessness after 208 rockets were fired from an out of control navy robot plane. He said he will urge the Board of Supervisors to condemn the actions and demand safeguards in the future.
Rockets fired from 30 000 feet over the mountains and Antelope Valley started a dozen fires across the region. The largest blaze consumed 350 acres of brush in Sold Canyon west of Mt. Gleason, spreading toward Pacoima Canyon. The Forest Service valued damage at 62000 and warned of threats to homes and a reservoir as 425 firefighters battled the flames.
Rep Hale Boggs jokes that Stevenson delays vice presidential nominating ballots to shift headlines away from the Republican convention opening in San Francisco next Monday. He says the long balloting will keep press focus on the Democrats.

In Los Angeles today a jury trial began in Superior Court over the insanity defense of James Merkouris 43 convicted of murdering his former wife Despine Forbes 34 on September 20 1954. He was sentenced to death in the gas chamber but the state supreme court ordered a retrial because the sentence was pronounced before his insanity trial.

Cooler air moves into the Great Lakes region as a change is expected.
Four installations of the Ohio Consolidated Telephone Co. were stoned during a 200 to 300 person crowd in Portsmouth and nearby New Boston. Police, including Portsmouth Police Chief Hugh Rudity, reported the majority of participants as teenagers amid a tense five week strike.

In Chicago two threatened pilots and machinists strikes were held in abeyance as the National Mediation Service arranges talks. The Air Line Pilots Association postponed its 300 pilot strike against National Airlines indefinitely, while a United Air Lines dispute was sent to mediation by the International Association of Machinists.
Bela Lugosi, 73, famed for Dracula roles, died at his Hollywood home reportedly from a heart attack. His wife Mrs. Hope Lininger Lugosi found him at 6 45 p m, Lugosi had been bedridden since March and weighed about 140 pounds. He asked to be buried in his Dracula coat. He married Lininger in August. his fourth wife was Lillian Arch.
In Minnesota he was upset by Estes Kefauver. Adlai E Stevenson regrouped with new tactics and less elitist style, shifting from Princeton persona to a more approachable candidate from Libertyville Illinois. The Chicago headquarters indicated the decision to fight was his own.
The White House announced the creation of a team of 11 scientists and engineers to plan future aviation facilities. Edward P. Curtis, special assistant to the President for aviation facilities planning, organized the group. Members include Dr. Ralph P. Johnson of Playa del Rey, California, vice president of the Ramo-Wooldridge Corp. of Los Angeles.
The U.S. Grand Jury indicted postal employee James Monroe Smith, 23, of Glen Avon, alleging he stole mail containing Riverside parking meter fines. The case highlights alleged theft within a postal operation in California.

California delegates cast ballots on the first roll call giving Senator Kefauver a plurality with 33 votes, Humphrey 23, Kennedy 10, in a Chicago caucus poll. The result signals Kefauver leading among the California delegation's preferences.
Judge Joseph J. Butler dismissed Ben E. Michell of St. Louis on scalping charges tied to the Democratic national convention. He ruled the city ordinance covers ballparks theaters and other amusements not a convention venue.

Daniel Arnold a 46 year old physical therapist survived five days after his station wagon left Buchanan Highway near Antioch California. Struck by a deer Sunday his car rolled five times and he became trapped at the bottom of a 40 foot ravine. He drank oily radiator water to stay alive until found by Emil Reber on Tuesday and altitude to Antioch Community Hospital for a fractured pelvis.
A stocking masked robber was killed when liquor store clerk Charles Young shot him behind the right ear after he threatened the clerk and a customer at 1:55 am in Los Angeles. The bandit, later identified as 71 year old David William Caughell of 625 West 55th Street, wore a brown stocking over his head and used a blanket to look heavier. The store was at 3127 West Imperial Highway. Customer John Elle Macelle, 32, was present.
Jewel Anne Berwanger, 13, of Tustin, selected as a Pythian Sisters youth camp delegate, disappeared during a bus train journey from Los Angeles to Fresno. Her mother Ruby Berwanger and her 11 year old brother David joined the search after she failed to reach the Fresno railroad station.
President Eisenhower meets with the National Security Council for a second time in two days. Officials say there is no emergency. The council met for about two and a half hours yesterday and will reconvene today, White House secretary James C. Hagerty reported.
