The tropical storm Betsy targets Florida from Daytona Beach to Miami with 110 mph winds. Betsy was 530 miles east southeast of Miami at 11 am moving northwest, forecasters say it is small in size but powerful near its center and could change direction. The storm had already caused damage in Puerto Rico and a Navy plane tracked its progression as easterly winds and gale conditions threaten the coast.
British planes and ships move troops toward the Mediterranean as London reports planeloads outbound and a new inbound flow of diplomatic personnel amid Middle East tensions.
The United States reaffirmed its complete agreement with Britain and France on the need for international means to ensure the practical and efficient functioning of the Suez Canal.

A 35 year old bartender Frank Romanello injured by tripping onto a carving knife during the Sabre Dance at his Hollywood home. He severed an artery in his right arm, received emergency care, then was moved to Kaiser Foundation Hospital in critical condition from blood loss. He was performing for friends at a party.
