Jack Schroeder 54 of 3111 E Colorado St was treated at Huntington Memorial Hospital for first and second degree burns after a boiler explosion in the Green Hotel basement. He was blown about 10 feet while lighting a gas filled boiler. Police and firefighters reported a smoke filled basement and no ongoing blaze.

In Woodsid e California an 80 year old man named Christian Shipman rushed into a burning home near Mrs Vince Stanton to rescue her from a burning mattress. He then helped two neighbors extinguish the fire using water from the kitchen.
S/Sgt. Matthew C. McKeon, a Marine drill instructor at Parris Island, is to be sentenced today after a seven-member court-martial acquitted him of involuntary manslaughter and upheld simple negligence. He was found guilty of drinking in the barracks and faces possible penalties up to hard labor and discharge.

Brinkley was released from Lincoln Heights jail after charges were dropped by Deputy District Attorney A H Warnberg. The incident occurred as Comiskey lay in bed.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles expressed confidence that the 24 nation conference on the Suez Canal starting August 16 in London will reach an international control plan acceptable to Egypt. He urged moderation while condemning Nasser's seizure and nationalization as an aggressive act.
American missionary Bishop Ambrose Pinger has been released from a Chinese prison, the U S Consulate reported. He was arrested August 19 1951 at Tsingtao during Communist rule.

In Los Angeles, 98 year old Myer Krich and 93 year old Hinda Jubas obtained a marriage license at the county clerk’s office. Both residents of the Jewish Home for the Aged, they plan to marry tomorrow before a large family crowd of 15 children, 27 grandchildren, and 40 great grandchildren.
Portland’s police chief Jim Purcell Jr was arrested today on an indictment charging incompetency malfeasance and delinquency in office. The indictment, returned by a Multnomah County grand jury after months of investigation, reflects alleged vice conditions in the Portland area. Purcell was released on $500 bail minutes after surrendering at the county courthouse. The Purcell case was one of seven indictments issued by the grand jury yesterday in its final action.
Typhoon Wanda moved northward after battering South China killing at least 92 people and injuring hundreds. It destroyed more than 5000 dwellings and damaged vast crops with widespread flooding across 500000 acres. damage also reported near Shanghai and Okinawa as Wanda weakens to gale force.
At Parks Air Force Base California three instructors face court martial for striking recruits. Airman Third Class Richard T. Smith 20 of Omaha Nebraska is also charged with soliciting money gifts from trainees. Other accused are Airman Third Class Dean A. Warren 19 also of Omaha and Airman Second Class William A. Ott 22 of Selah Washington. Ten airmen alleged to have been struck. one treated at the base hospital for a shoulder injury.
California city councils and boards of supervisors evade open meeting laws by using subcommittees that meet at members homes. President Seymour Sterling of the California Newspaper Publishers Assn. voiced the concern at the CNPA quarterly meeting in Long Beach.
