Sargeant Cutts of the Town Detachment asks Town Council to hire three additional RCMP officers to create a Preventive Policing Program. He cites heavy workload, unequal hours, and no overtime compensation, hoping to ease duties and free officers for community programs. Cont page 4.
A Herald photographer reports an inquiry about a death at the Provincial office after spotting a flag flown upside down. The flag was turned right side up shortly after the picture was taken, the photographer notes, and the incident occurred Monday.
A charge of illegal liquor possession against seven stock car drivers from a September 12 raid at the track was dropped in Magistrate's Court. Crown Attorney Murray Smith said meetings with the stock car club led to both sides telling their versions, with the club vowing such incidents won’t recur and noting police warnings were given to a member.
The Pas article outlines a new day care centre started by Antoinette O Boyle aimed at aiding working mothers. Currently only six children attend two afternoons a week despite a spring extension to serve twenty daily or multiple weekly slots.
Public hearing in Council Chambers drew several citizens opposing the 1971 Planning Scheme. Doug McBride recorded objections at absence of The Pas Town Planning Commission and Provincial Planning Dept. The scheme, amended from 1966, again centers on redesignation of land from open space and light industrial districts as the process returns to the Town Planning Commission for study and recommendations.
Minor Hockey president Jack Kennedy announced a coaches clinic and mi ni hockey school starting this Friday October 1 at the arena and running through the weekend. He urged parents to participate, noting no obligation to coach but to gain coaching tips useful for their own children.
The first shipments of 1971 crops moved from The Pas by Canadian National Railways. A carload of 2,764 bushels of barley went to Churchill, while 1,956 bushels of rapeseed were sent to Pacific Elevators in Vancouver. Both crops came from growers in the surrounding area.
