Over 30 local hockey players attended Canadian summer schools and returned ready for the October season. Fred Tycoles earned the "Most Improved Player" at the Dave Keon Billy Harris school in St John’s Ravencourt Winnipeg for skating desire and attitude.
A telegram from Mayor Jack Kennedy to CBC president Laur ent Picard raised questions about CBC coverage of Canada-Russia hockey games in Northern Manitoba. The notice cites delays and uncertainty over whether CBC would air all eight games, with a September 1 announcement confirming coverage starting September 2 and the first game on September 4. The mayor’s telegraph return home awaited further word on impact.
Fire crews battled a Wednesday evening blaze that gutted the remnants of the former White’s Esso building on Third Street. The flames were reported at 8:40 PM and by 8:30 PM crowds dispersed as the Volunteeer brigade contained the fire. Town officials estimate about $1,900 in damage for trucks and manpower. A witness report alleges three children threw sparkling flares into the structure, which fire authorities believe started the fire. The building had already suffered heavy damage months earlier.
Town Council awarded the arena concession contract to Stan Reid and Ed Eggerer after a Kelsey Recreation Commission recommendation. The bid price was $1,500 or 10 percent of press sales for the season, whichever is greater, with rivals including Mike Melnick at $1,506 and Mr and Mrs Mercer at $150 per month.
Town Council announces opposition to a proposed TransAir fare increase of $4.00 to The Pas and other northern centres. Councillor Doug McBride moves a resolution urging telegrams against the hike. Mayor Jack Kennedy seeks a meeting with TransAir as northern communities unite to press for better northern service.
Effective January 1973 Selsey B Division expands. On January 1 1974 The Pas Indian Reserve 21 joins Kel Sey School Division No 45 after a May hearing with no objections. A Board of Reference granted the request under the Public Schools Act with conditions on asset liability sharing and trustee election provisions for Ward 4.
School children returned to Kelsey Elementary as buses drop them off. Dog catcher Dale Scott reports seven dogs picked up since opening day, totaling 97 since April. He warns that once children realize he is nearby, pets will stay at home.
Rainbow trout raised near The Pas will be sold through local grocers in early October. Northern Manitoba trials focus on Footprint Lake north of Grand Rapids with goals to identify suitable northern lakes and develop farming criteria. The project, involving government and research bodies, seeks to boost water resource use and create fishing jobs.
