The Pas Lions host annual Monster Bingo on Saturday September 29 at 8 p.m. Net proceeds benefit Lion's Community Service. Advance tickets $2 entitle one card for 20 games with extra cards sold at the rink. A $50 prize for advance-ticket players is offered, plus a $500 game and another $500 in prizes across the remaining games.
The Avenue Hotel in The Pas is undergoing renovations to create the communitys third licensed dining room and second Beverage Room. The southern front is being extended to Fischer Avenue. Owner Morris Didur says the expanded space will house a dining room licensed for beer and wine, with the former downstairs suite also used for the beverage operation. The beer parlor will be remodeled into a Beverage Room serving both beer and wine to all customers.
Falconbridge Mines awards an 18000 dollar contract for a new residence in The Pas east end subdivision. Hayes and Nelson to begin work soon for Dr J J Brummer, a resident geologist. The Pas is highlighted as gateway to the north with further northern Manitoba exploration, including Com West Exploration basing operations there.
Norman Robinson of The Pas died in his sleep Monday near Flin Flon. He worked for Poole Construction at the Big Island Lake camp and was a member of B P O Ellis and the Rhythm Pals orchestra. He leaves wife Dugalda, daughter Joan, and sons Billie and Douglas.
The Pas faces a possible shutdown of Pinky Laundry by September 39 if it fails to obtain a government certificate and meet health and operational rulings. The town council demands a competent operator from 7 a.m. to midnight, repaired machines, and payment of all arrears by September 30. Without compliance the Health Department will deny certification and close the laundry.
Tenders will be opened in Winnipeg on September 25 for hard surfacing of the final 20.5 miles of the north south highway at the Bog south of The Pas. This completes the last remaining north south highway miles. Public Works hopes fall weather allows both stretches to finish this fall. On October 2 tenders will be opened for grading and gravelling of 19 miles on the Snow Lake Thompson road at the Wekusko end.
TransAir Limited asks the Air Transport Board to add Lynn Lake to its Winnipeg Dauphin The Pas and Flin Flon route on a regular scheduled basis. The Lynn Lake service has been operated on a tentative class 2 license with possible cancellation without notice. The board will hear the application and related submissions on September 28.
Premier Duff Roblin announced at The Pas during 50th Anniversary events that The Pas is the logical site for a northern Manitoba government school. Town Council weighed two sites Sixth and Cathedral or Seventh and Charlebois, with a Catholic diocese block between them as an alternative.
The 15 elementary classrooms may rise to 23 if the Department of Indian Affairs wins Ottawa approval for an integration program. IA would fund the eight extra rooms and cover admin and teaching costs. A fall by law vote is planned, possibly October 19, with Ottawa decisions delaying or shifting to November or December.
The Pas municipal election occurs Friday October 19 with three Town Council vacancies and two Kelsey School Board seats. Electors in Carrot Valley Rahis Island will choose a one year school trustee to fill Laine Coad’s vacancy as he resigns at year end. Council terms for Hiatt Didur and Verville expire this year along with Barkett and Snider on the School Board. Berg Stevens and Gibson remain as Trustees.
The Pas and District Horticultural Society schedules its September meeting for Tuesday 18 at 8 p m in the Club Room at Guy Hall. Two speakers are planned Dr Leslie landscape consultant and former Morden Experimental Farm superintendent and Mr F Wier secretary of the Manitoba Horticultural Association. Gardening enthusiasts are invited to attend.
Jack Berg, chairman of the Kelsey School Board, states that a northern Manitoba technical training school in The Pas serves the entire region and does not reduce demand for public school space. He warns against false impressions and notes the program aims to help students seeking trades after formal schooling.
A memoir excerpt recounts the Calgary Tanks of the Canadian Armoured Corps detachment to the 2nd Division preparing for Dieppe on August 17 18 1942. It describes troop movements from Seaford to Portsmouth aboard a Tank Landing Craft with Churchill tanks packed with ammunition and Royal Canadian Engineers adding to the crowded hold.
