Manitoba will switch to standard time on the night of September 12 places. The province officially ends Daylight Saving Time at 3 1 on September 13 giving residents an extra hour Sunday morning. The change follows provisions of the Official Time Act passed by the Legislature.
Department of Agriculture officials describe area crops as pretty good but late due to lack of sun. Harvesting was expected in late August but has been delayed. six weeks of good weather could improve yields, though some crops like canola and barley face slow ripening. Continuous moisture and late plantings leave Ely varieties and carrots behind, with continued page seven continuation.
Louise Rivalin reports on an eight week Rotary visit to Argentina with three Winnipeg companions. She toured a military school rode a pulo horse and enjoyed Argentine cuisine while receiving special access to a gambling casino. She was rescued from authorities by a nineteen year old chaperone after going missing. Rivalin returned to The Pas Rotary with sixteen banners for display at meetings.
Louise Rivalin daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Rivalin spoke to The Pas Rotary Club last Wednesday evening. Present were Rotary Ann members and four district 558 Rotary daughters bearing local banners. She showed slides of The Pas and The Pas Trappers Festival loaned by Rev Ron Johnstone and Gordon Eberly, and planned to present them in Argentina after visiting Winnipeg New York World’s Fair Texan Pavilion Vatican Pavilion and Du Pont Pavilion.
Last Friday Pip, the Williams children’s chosen name for the Batchelor, visited St Pauls during a holiday stop and headed to his new home on Constant. Mrs. Williams Frankie notes Pip’s favorite meal was bananas.
Municipal affairs minister Robert S Smellie announced a new grants in lieu of taxes formula boosting The Pas province property grants to 20233 from 1667 under the old system The change bases grants on building value as well as land as recommended by the Michener Commission Consol and Mystery Lake Districts are slated for increases with Consol rising to 1479 from 284 and Mystery to a larger benefit while the note continues on page four
The Thompson settlement ends the strike with an 11.5 percent pay rise over three years from March 1. Workers also receive a $100 settlement bonus, up from $60, as talks between the Union and INCO continue. The agreement covers back pay from March 1 through the end of the strike. The union pressed for a government study on living costs in Thompson, including rents and freight rates, while also noting the Thompson road should reopen by December 1.
Vandalism and theft reported at the Winton Swimming Pool as a $68 water testing instrument disappeared last Thursday evening. Pool officials from The Passions Club doubt how entry was gained since doors and windows were locked or barred. A knife or similar tool may have been used to force the front door and slip the inside bolt.
The Pas Lions announce monster bingo on Saturday September 19 at The Pas Arena with 15 games and $1000 total prize money. Tickets cost $2 advancing ticket holders can win $50 door prize. proceeds fund the town swimming pool project of $2100 with remaining balance due by year end.
The Kelsey Division Teachers' Association announces a teacher training bursary for a graduate of The Pas Collegiate entering an approved teacher training program this fall. The award has not yet been granted and details continue on page 12.
The United Church organizes a three day Northern Manitoba Men's Conference October 2 to 4 at Evergreen Lodge Clearwater Lake The Pas Westminster United hosts. Theme speaker Dr Graham Pincock director of assessment and rehabilitation at Deer Lodge Hospital Winnipeg will deliver three addresses Friday Saturday and Sunday on Who is Fighting Where is the Fight Whats Winning with discussion groups to follow
Flying Officer A J Petry son of Mr and Mrs F Petryk Cranberry Portage Manitoba receives his wings after eighteen months of flying training at RCAF Station Portage la Prairie Manitoba. Air Vice Marshal L F Stevenson presents wings to thirteen graduates. Petryk is well known in The Pas.
