McGillivary Named Employment Counsellor for C.F.I.

Rod McGillivary of The Pas Indian Reserve has been hired by Churchill Forest Industries as Employment Counsellor effective October 13. He joins the C.F.I. management team to offer job opportunities to Indian and Metis people. He aims for five hours daily and will recommend candidates for vacancies and on the job training.

Nine Hour Flight Re-Enacted in The Pas Anniversary

The Pas held a commemorative re-enactment of the Winnipeg The Pas flight history Thursday October 1. A De Havilland Tiger Moth landed at Lamb Air strip marking the first commercial flight into Northern Manitoba in October 1920. Pilot Dr. C B Stewart and Duncan Marshall staged the landing as postal clerks unloaded about 180 commemorative letters.

Students Clean Pas River Bank on National Survival Day

About 30 pollution minded Grade 12 students from Margaret Barbour Collegiate joined geography teacher Don Cameron to clean the Pas River bank in town limits on October 14. They wore boots and gloves and pulled items from the mud and found a live seagull which was sent to a biology teacher for care.

Elks Install Officers In Lodge Installation Night

The Elks No. 136 held its annual installation of officers on a Saturday night October 17 in the Elks Hall. The pictured officers for the coming year include Exalted Ruler Walter Johnson and others with missing members noted. A social and dance followed the ceremony.

Don Cossack Chorus at M.B.C. I. Auditorium

The Don Cossack Chorus performs in The Pas this evening at the M B C I auditorium. Curtain is 8 30 p m. The Pas Lions Club sponsors the concert and some tickets remain at the door.

Municipal Supt Asked To Resign In The Pas

The Pas Town Council held a special meeting to review the Municipal Superintendent Fritz Cameron. The council passed a resolution requesting his resignation effective October 8th due to an inability to carry out duties.

Ross Report Sent to Municipal Affairs Minister

The Town's council asked Municipal Affairs Minister Howard Paulley to have his department review a confidential report on the administration of The Town. The report was commissioned by the council to examine local governance.

Manitoba Newstart program discussed in Ottawa letter

On October 2 Gordon Johnston released a letter criticizing Jean Marchand's understanding of the Manitoba NewStart Corporation at The Pas. Marchand replies that NewStart is a jointly run non departmental experiment aimed at aiding severely disadvantaged people including many natives. The executive director is a Canadian Indian chosen to serve under provincial federal joint governance.

Irene Young receives six month suspended sentence for theft

In Magistrate Court Irene Young was charged with Theft under 50 after RCMP say she took one pair of children's shoes from SAAN in The Pas, valued at 7.99. With no prior record, Magistrate Martin ordered six months suspended and directed good behaviour with potential return to serve if trouble resumes.
