Hon. Jack Carroll will address the Pas Chamber of Commerce annual dinner meeting while the C of C hosts the welfare topic discussion.
The Pas Overture Concert Association offers membership tickets for concerts in The Pas and other Canadian centers. The season opens Wednesday December 2 with the Carilions, followed by Malka and Jaxo on January 7, then the Lenard Sisters on March 22. Contact local members for tickets.
Magistrate Neil Macphee acquitted Richard Jackson of Film Flow on a charge of wilful damage. In separate matters Al Curie and Robt Hagstrom were convicted of impaired driving, each fined $200 and had licenses suspended three months.
The council met Tuesday November 10 and decided to seek voluntary closing hours from 2:30 to 5:00 a.m. The Nip House had urged this change amid Edwards Avenue concerns. By law would set one to four a.m. closing under the Manitoba Shops Regulations Act affecting all local restaurants during the Trappers Festival and tourist season.
The Pas Lions Club hosts a Saturday two hall bingo with fifteen games totaling 1000 in prizes. Game 15 offers 500, tickets sell for 2, one can play at the Legion or Not-Life Halls, with a 25 door prize for advance tickets. Proceeds aid the Winston swimming pool project.
Cecil Charles Asmus was sentenced to eight years in a penitentiary after being found guilty of manslaughter in the June death of Jamestown North Dakota lawyer Jerome Granner near Cranberry Portage. His brother-in-law William Henry Chaboyer was acquitted. co-defendants Wilfred Christianson and Roland Francoeur received one-year perjury terms.
RCMP investigate 16 sticks of fused dynamite placed in three post office slots in Flin Flon over the weekend. The devices tied with shoelaces were found Monday by postal clerks at a Third Street mailbox. Police link the stash to three explosives seized from Cliff Lake Water Lifting Station on November 2 and urge residents to monitor for further signs of dynamite.
The Cattett River Valley Hockey League welcomes Melfort Athletics into the league for the 1964 65 season. Five clubs Nipawin Tisdale Hudson Bay The Pas and Melfort will play 16 games each. The season opens December 19 at The Pas with Huskies hosting Melfort. George Leedin is club president Al Mazur vice president Wally Dwytiuk secretary treasurer and statistician.
The Pas Curling Club held its first63 64 general meeting at the Rink last Thursday to elect a new officer slate. Elected: President Stu Corbett 1st Vice Pres Merce Corkel Vice Pres Liu Donaldson Secretary Bev Jackson Treasurer Al Vesey Drawmaster Verne Aim MCA Representative Cal Gibson Alternate MCA Representative Don Fisher. The executive may appoint committee heads and a ways and means committee was proposed to fund club activities. For this year only the artificial ice plant plan was abandoned due to various factors.
The CNR announces 40 to 70 percent reductions on express freight from 100 to 10 000 pounds. Reductions apply to points including Chur chill Lyon Lake Thompson, with The Pas seeing a lesser cut. Officials note distance governs the greater rate reduction.
The 5 percent tax on phone, power and heating bills was approved by the Manitoba Legislature and goes into effect December 1 as part of a broad plan to shift tax burden from local to provincial coffers. It aims to raise about $2.8 million yearly and finances rebates to school taxpayers plus funding for municipal road costs and grants to municipalities.
The Pas Rotary Club announced sponsorship for Joan Robinson in the Trappers Festival Queen contest. Robinson, educated in The Pas, is currently employed by the Manitoba Government in The Pas.
The four top students from Margaret Barbour Collegiate in The Pas will appear on CBC Reach for the Top in Winnipeg on January 8. If they win, they return as flight winners. A run-off will choose the Winnipeg team from grades 9 to 12, with possible involvement from a younger student. Funds may be raised for travel, meals, and possibly hotel expenses.
The three Girl Guides pictured received their All Round Cards at a United Church ceremony during a Halloween Party hosted by First and Mrs Art. Day presented the awards to Kathy Smith Rosalind Ridings and Barbara Smith.
