Gordon Lundy, an 18 year old Grade 4 student at Margaret Barbour Collegiate, wrapped a knee injury after 20 miles of the 30 mile March for Million route. He quit due to the knee strain from volleyball earlier this year while aiming to support the event this weekend.
The Town RCMP are investigating two last week break-ins. Wagner Jewel and Gift Shop suffered a window smash and 42 rings were stolen valued around $1,300. Carnegie Service was also entered the same morning with 15 tires taken. No arrests have been made and officers continue to investigate.
Town council discussed a resolution by Councillor Ed Johanson to have the Town Solicitor draft a by law for removing abandoned vehicles on private property unknown ownership or under town jurisdiction. Councillor Alex Wilchowy opposed the measure stating opposition to municipal involvement with such vehicles. The meeting noted existing parking rules cover on street violations.
The Pas Overture Concert Association announces three local concerts for the 1969 70 season. Jan Rubes appears in November, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in January, and "Men of Song" closes the spring 70 program. Memberships available by phone at 623-3447.
Wildlife biologist Rr Robertson reports the Buffalo herd near the Saskatchewal border rose last week with 12 cows and four new calves seen from the air. Two bulls were also sighted this spring, suggesting most animals wintered well. The original herd released last fall consisted of 16 cows and four bulls.
Councillor Ed Johanson, chair of the Town Planning Commission, proposed expanding Town Limits to include an east side land for light industry. He noted prior plans to incorporate Ralph MacMillan land and River Lots one to six including utility sites and vacant private parcels, aiming to support industrial development alongside a trailer court project.
Spruce Products Limited of mile 25 Clear Water Lake will rebuild a bigger saw mill after its main mill was destroyed by a weekend fire. Manager Gten Thompson said repair and cleanup are underway, with construction seen in about two and a half months and about a month to remove new machinery. Insurance covered an estimated loss over 200 000 dollars. The company operates two sawmills a planer and a framer and will use the original mill until the new structure is complete. About 20 to 30 workers were kept on, with extra help for cleanup as flames were battled by 25 to 30 men amid gusts up to 40 miles per hour.
Alice Cook a grade nine student at M B C was crowned Field Day Queen at the schools spring prom Friday. Born at Pelican Rapids and now living at Grand Rapids she is a boarding student at Guy Hill residence in her first year at the school. Brenda Baker and Carol Coutu served as princesses in the photo with Doug Long pausing to adjust the crown.
TransAir plans to adjust its summer schedule at The Pas in response to civic objections. A daily Winnipeg to The Pas flight would arrive Clearwater Lake at 2 05 PM with a noon Winnipeg departure, and thrice weekly The Pas Thompson connections on Monday and Tuesday mornings. Sales manager Peter Lyons met locally. New times take effect June 1 with potential earlier adjustments by July 1.
The Pas Progressive Conservative Association holds an organizational meeting on the new constituency boundaries and also acts as a nominating convention to select a PC candidate for the June 25 provincial election. The gathering is set for 7:00 PM at the Legion Hall in The Pas on Saturday May 1.
The Pas Music Festival Association holds its annual meeting on Tuesday June 3 at 8 p.m. in Opasquia School. Members and interested persons are urged to attend.
Rosalind Riette Ridings, graduate of Margaret Barbour Collegiate in The Pits, earned the university bronze medal in French during convocation at the University of Winnipeg on Sunday May 25. She was among 16 award winners from 415 graduates.
