Celeste Roy attended a gathering alongside Princess Shawn Saranchuk. Also present were Che Ryl Devenny, president of the Student Council, and Denyse Arseneault, secretary.
Thirty grade six students from Kelsey Opasquia and Sacred Heart Schools in The Pas swapped places with peers from St George and Hastings Schools in St Vital. The May 24 29 exchange is part of Manitoba Centennial Twinning Programme. Arriving by air Sunday, visitors were welcomed at Opasquia School by Principal Vaughn Wadelius and given fur ties on Mayor Trager’s behalf.
The Singer Sewing Machine Company questioned a local business licence levy in a letter to Town Council. It argued its operations run from the Robinson Store and service hospitals, schools, and other institutions in The Pas, with machine sales and service calls offered at cost or below. Council took no action.
Gerry Ferguson arrived with his wife and family to take the first fulltime recreation director post in The Pas. He will write a weekly column in The Herald detailing recreation activities and plans under the Kelsey Recreation Commission. The Fergusons reside at Clearwater Lake until housing is found.
Eleven residents from multiple neighborhoods asked the council to address dirty streets and despised conditions on Fischer and Edwards Avenues. They rejected superficial cleanup and urged pride and official resolutions against derogatory remarks in Winnipeg papers. They proposed wire litter cans outside downtown eateries and distributed throughout the area.
The Town of The Pas faced a Queen's Bench ruling that quashed two resolutions approving land sale to Porky Packers Ltd for a meat packing plant off highway 10. Judgement May 6 prompted potential injunctions and damages. a May 15 council meeting with Mayor Trager and three councillors addressed the decision, with two members expected absent.
The Department of Regional Economic Expansion plans a 5.9 million dollar grant and loan program for The Pas area under Ottawa's special Area scheme. DREE will open a trailer office in the C2 downtown zone after Town Council permitted its placement.
The Town of The Pas hires P S Ross and Partners to study staff needs and current personnel, with a 3500 cap. The council authorized the work after a prior meeting with the firm's representative. The study will explore staffing levels and a possible Town Manager option.
Police reported three break ins over the weekend. A smashed plate glass at North American Lumber on Second Street exposed a stolen company truck driven through a wire gate and found near the Big Eddy Reserve. Frechette's Dairy and Shell Bulk Plant also suffered break ins with money missing.
RCMP town detachment responded around 10 PM last Saturday to a wandering calf on Taylor Avenue. One patrol car and a paddy wagon were sent, the calf was placed in the wagon, and owner Albert Lagimodiere was later located after neighbors recalled children herding the calf with a dog nearby.
Town receives a letter from Ted Scoles of Seventh St East proposing part of Centennial Park be developed as a playground. He cites a growing need for facilities in the 7th St East area with about 100 new dwellings nearby. The suggestion asks the recreation director consider temporary or permanent playground development. Chief Gordon Lathlin told The Pas Town Council relations between The Pas and The Pas Indian Band are widening. Discussion at last week’s meeting covered the Indian Trailer Court for 168 trailers, rent per trailer, and levies for the lift station and subdivision. Bancroft cited the Municipal Act limit of $10 per trailer, council had sought $21 then $18.75. the rest funds cover police, fire protection, and education costs.
More than seven hundred walkers took part in a Pool-a-Thon to raise funds for a proposed indoor swimming pool. Pledges totaled just over 14 000 dollars by Sunday evening with Albert Ballantyne of Teamsters Local 745 finishing the full 25 mile course in 3 hours 45 minutes. Delmar Rookes and Walter Koshel followed about 45 minutes later as 327 others completed the trek before 7 30 p.m.
