The Pas observes Hospital Day on Saturday May 28 with a silver tea at St. Anthony's Hospital from 2 30 to 5 p m on the first floor. Public invited to tour the hospital and see demonstrations as St Anthony's plans a 3 million expansion program.
Cal Gibson named Liberal candidate for the June 23 provincial election by The Pas Liberal Association. He is 39 and unopposed. Gibson, a school board member and local business operator, was nominated with backing from Tom Lamb and Jack Kennedy as about 50 delegates attended. Gil Molgat criticized the Conservative government over the heat tax and power rates, noting a claimed 22 million dollar surplus.
Two Acquisitions Branch officials visited The Pas to discuss land needed for a highway bridge approach. Mayor Harry Trager says talks involve the town and province with cost estimates from 30 000 to 40 000 for land and a new warehouse, while land alone is valued at 1500 by Land Acquisition. The town has already spent 2700 on land from Indian Affairs for a storage area.
Executive meeting of the Musical Festival Association on May 10 decides the Annual Meeting will be May 26 at 8 o clock in the large Opasquai School. Officers for 1966 will be elected and year’s activities reviewed. Citizens urged to attend and support the festival. policy suggestions welcome.
Tests to identify oil discharging into the Saskatchewan River from Pas sewer lines show bunker 16 oil. The health department ordered a thorough probe while officials consider legal action for damages to boats. The oil slick reached Red Rock and may affect Moose and Cedar Lakes as river boats contemplate suits.
The Highways Department and Town Council face who pays for cost overruns on three streets LaRose sev enth and First. Base prep was $35 500 with a 50 50 split. actual spent $24 500 left $11 000 for this year. Surfacing bids rose 25 percent from $40 000 to $50 000, pushing total to complete streets to $61 000 with a 50 50 division.
Bill Brauneis proprietor of Woodwork and Machine Shop voiced protest at Town Council over LaRose Street paving. He warned a three foot grade change could force him from his business, citing building in line with an earlier level.
The Pas Progressive Conservative Association sets Saturday May 28 at 8:00 p.m. in Legion Hall The Pas for its nomination convention. The provincial election is set for Thursday June 23. The Pas seat is held by Conservative MP Jack Carroll who served since 1957 and is expected to seek re election. Bud Simpson MP will be guest speaker.
A drama group from The Pas directed by Barbara Butler was named best adult play in the Manitoba Drama Festival at Crystal City. The Pas group won the Free Press Shield for The Marriage Proposal by Anton Chekhov and actor Fred Kaite captured best adult actor honors for his portrayal of the father Tschubukov.
Dr Colin Rolfe has joined the Associate Medical Clinic at The Pas after serving as Medical Health Director for Manitoba Health in The Pas. A 1955 Birmingham Medical School graduate, he earlier held roles in the RAF Coastals Command Newfoundland and at Port Smith Hospital. He and his wife and three children reside on Constant Avenue.
Council gave first and second readings to a library by law last Wednesday and it now goes to the Minister of Municipal Affairs for approval. Voters will decide in the October municipal election after the by law is advertised locally. The measure would authorize annual funding for the public library in The Pas. Also, Mr. R Yachieu was appointed water works supervisor effective June 1 replacing Dick Turner who resigned. The town set the new pay rate for the position. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
