An oil spill in The Pas prompted health officials to sample river and sewer line oils. The CNR bunker fuel tanks matched river oil, with wildlife damage expected to be minimal. Government crews began burning off oil along the riverbanks this week.
Premier Roblin announced in Winnipeg that the Manitoba government will extend live television to northern Manitoba in cooperation with the CBC and the Manitoba Telephone System. The pledge is part of the Conservative election platform ahead of the June 23 vote.
Canadian National Telecom crews began installing two new power lines north of The Pas to Lynn Lake. The system links to existing facilities at The Pas and will feed two new low power CBC radio transmitters at Pukatawagan and Lynn Lake. Telex teletype and voice telephone circuits will also be provided. project completion is expected before year end.
Two dog teams would start simultaneously from The Pas and Winnipeg and run a course parallel to Highway 10 as a festival promotion for the 1967 Trappers' Festival. The plan includes a January journey with a reverse-direction race and mail delivery to civic leaders inviting attendance.
MBCI athletes competed in the Zone track and field meet at Flin Flon producing 23 local students who will represent northern Manitoba at the provincial meet in Winnipeg. They held a all day car wash at Kelsey Trail Esso to raise funds for the chartered bus trip and festival activities.
This week construction began on a $1000000 block north of the new Vocational School on Seventh. George Munro and Ray Johnston of Dauphin lead the project with C.J. Smith as overall contractor. Excavation by Eric Watts of The Pas, occupancy expected August 1.
The Kelsey School Division announced four principal appointments across primary and elementary schools. W. Doherty becomes principal of Mary Duncan School, O. Gree ning leads Kelsey Primary, and Bill Cornish takes Kel sey Elementary. Steve unnamed continues.
Progressive Conservative Jack Carroll, Minister of Welfare in the Roblin government, was nominated for The Pas constituency for the June 23 provincial election. He was first elected to the Manitoba Legislature in 1957 and has held the seat since. The nomination was confirmed at a convention in The Pas with about 125 attendees. Carroll was nominated by Cornelius Bignell and seconded by Mel Dagg.
Professor Walter Lampe of the University of Manitoba assisted by John MacKenzie led a four day leadership course at The Pas Indian Reserve over a long weekend. Twenty two people from eight organizations including the Chief and Councillors attended. The program covered leadership definitions problem solving meeting procedures public speaking and effective questioning. Attendees learned to coordinate organizations and form teams to drive improved conditions on the Reserve. Some observers argue reservations should be abolished while others say well organized communities require leadership training to solve issues.
