More than seven hundred walkers joined the Lion-O Thon last Saturday to raise funds for the Lions Club share in a proposed indoor pool. About four hundred finished the 20 mile hike, with pledges around $5,000 at Sunday’s tally and final totals to follow.
P K Ausborn has been appointed superintendent for Canadian National Railways at The Pas. He will oversee Hudson Bay Area transportation on CN lines north of Hudson Bay to Thompson and Churchill. Ausborn began with CN as a Winnipeg switchman.
The Pas Manitoba shows a building boom with April 1971 permits totaling 1.491 million dollars all for commercial buildings. Building inspector Fritz Cameron notes April was the peak month, far higher than last year's 66 thousand. He cites a new water treatment plant permit valued at about 500 thousand and Roy Carter opening a new venture last week.
A meeting on community management and development was held at the courthouse last Wednesday night. About 35 businessmen and Chamber of Commerce members attended. Glen Husack of the Manitoba Institute of Management outlined the program’s advantages, stressing small firms must exploit regional markets and leverage flexibility to stay competitive.
Next Monday May 24 is a National Holiday. The Herald office closes that day. Advertising copy for the May 26 issue must be in by 11 a.m. Tuesday. News releases must arrive by noon Friday May 21. Paper will be distributed late Wednesday afternoon May 26.
The Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Inspection set up in The Pas over several days reports 581 cars checked with notable findings. One car with 5000 miles on the odometer passed the test but was found to have a steering box held by a single bolt, while its driver planned a trip to Nova Scotia towing a large trailer. The incident underscores safety gains from the inspection program.
Churchill Forest Industries expands to a third logging camp six miles south of Wa bowden on Sipiwesk Road between Highway 391 and Sipiwesk Lake. Coplin Lake camp houses 35 workers with facilities for 64. 600 thousand cords of timber accessible and annual cut projected at 28 000 cords. Other camps at Cranberry Portage and west of Atik on Highway 10 north of The Pas employ about 100 each. No trucked timber due to spring breakup. cutting continues at 3500 cords weekly. Evans touts first class camp facilities.
Twin Motors plans a near future move to a new southern The Pas site. The entire garage operation except the body shop will relocate to the new premises while the body shop remains at the old location.
Police stayed proceedings on an arson charge against Miss Edna Sparrow of The Pas. She had elected trial by judge without a jury and her lawyer D Arcy Bancroft requested an examination at the Forensic Clinic in Winnipeg. The charge stems from a fire at Alliance Church on Patrick Avenue.
Thieves struck two more local businesses in successive nights last week ten days after Fishman's was broken into. On May 11 police said a window at Swan River The Pas Transfer was smashed and the front door opened from the inside. A 300 pound safe was dragged across the loading ramp onto a vehicle.
Manitoba NewStart outlines seven projects since inception, with six completed. Project 7 analyzes persistence in mining employment among Indians and Metis near Lynn Lake and Thompson, aiming to explain high dropout rates and gauge interest in returning under better mutual understanding. Dr Colin McCaffrey outlined the study. Howard Fraser directs the project. Len Norman assists, with ongoing work through June 30, 1971.
Barbara Sangster a 19 year old from Thompson Manitoba and 1970 Fur Queen of The Pas Trappers Festival has been chosen to represent Manitoba in the 1971 Miss Dominion of Canada Pageant at Niagara Falls June 26 to July 2. The Thompson student born in Kamsack Saskatchewan moved to Thompson ten years ago and is a grade 12 student at R D Parker Collegiate. The winner faces Miss Universe Miss World and Miss International opportunities.
