Trappers Festival Dates Set for February

The 1966 Trappers Festival is scheduled for February 10 11 and 12 with festivities on the night of the 12th. The dates avoid conflicts with the Prince Albert Winter Festival and the Beausejour Farewell to Winter Carnival. The executive committee also approved vacating Festival Headquarters to cut $430 yearly rent and arranged for storage or sale of Festival assets.

Magistrate Warns Speeders in Town Court

Magistrate Neil Macphee issued a stern warning to motorists who persist in speeding through town streets. The court noted too many young offenders appear on speeding charges and repeats. A second offence would trigger license suspension.

Snipers Fire On Bush Plane Near Lynn Lake

Morley Wilson a Dolphin Airways pilot faced gunfire from unknown assailants while landing a Norseman at Lynn Lake. Bullets from a 22 rifle damaged the windshield and struck him, causing a brief loss of control before a rough landing. Police pursue juvenile suspects from Windy Lake flight.

A city committee discussed building a 1300 seat arena with a six sheet curling rink and two storey club rooms for a sports center. Estimated total nears 125000 with pledges from Lions and Kinsmen totaling 3000 and curling club pledging up to 21000 by 1967 as plans proceed with contractor return next week.

At a recent Council meeting a rift surfaced over the Town Planning Committee’s operation. Chair Marvin Hill and Ivan Taylor led a quarrel with Councillor Alex Wilchowy who urged abolishing the committee and placing planning duties under the Town Council.

Elk’s Carnival at lodge May 14 and 15

The B P O Elks Lodge hosts its annual spring carnival on Friday and Saturday May 14 and 15. Doors open each night at seven with games of skill and chance for all ages including cash bingo fish pond and dart games. Concessions offer popcorn hot dogs and coffee, proceeds go to Elks charity work.

The Pas Town Council agreed to renew a ten year lease with the local lodge of the BPO Ellis Lodge for the playground beside the lodge on Edwards Street.

New Britain Student Questions Pas Map In Canada Story

Patricia Staron an 11 year old fifth grader from New Britain Connecticut wrote to The Pas Manitoba seeking details about a dog sled race of 150 miles or more. Her letter prompted a reply from School Inspector Roland McCurdy and a News feature with Patricia and her teacher examining a northern Manitoba map.

Pair Guilty Of Manslaughter In Kematch Death

Lawrence Allan Harris and Robert Bignell were found guilty of manslaughter over Moses Kematch's death near Shoal River last February. Bignell got six years and Harris three after originally facing non captain murder charges.

Salvation Army Band Concert in The Pas May Twenty Second

The Salvation Army Band from Brandon Manitoba will perform in The Pas on Saturday May 22 at the Margaret Barbour Collegiate Auditorium. Directed by Hon. Walter Dinsdale MP the concert marks the Salvation Army Centennial observance in May. A youth band sponsored by the local corps will also appear at the show.

Wavey Acquitted On Murder Count

A Court of Queen's Bench jury found John David Wavey of Ilford not guilty of murder in the death of Daniel Beardy last November 2. The Crown alleged Beardy died after a fight. the defense argued Beardy died from a fall striking his head on a railway track. Beardy had been drinking.

Wet Weather Strands Roads Around The Pas

Heavy rain last week damaged roads around The Pas Manitoba. The Rain Bridge at Mile 52 on the Saskatchewan side of Oto squen Road is washed out. Motorists to Hudson Bay advised to use Highway 10. Thompson road between Wekusko and Paint Lake impassable. Bridge washouts near Mafeking cause detours. One lane light traffic on Westgate Road amid washed shoulders.
