Jury finds Forster shooting accidental in Manitoba case

A 12 man Court of Queen's Bench jury deliberated about ten hours before finding 23 year old Clayton Guay not guilty on the non capital murder charge. The August 22 shooting death of Everett Forster near The Pas was ruled accidental after the trial concluded.

Fourteen year old Ken Gurba of The Pas weighs in a Jack Fish weighing 18 pounds to qualify for a master angler award. ACM Police witnessed the weigh in at Jack Fish Creek north of The Pas after a Sunday morning fishing trip with his father Steve.

Kelsey School District Budget Soars 18.9 Percent

Secretary-Treasurer Ken Perry released figures showing an 18.9 percent budget increase for Kelsey School Division for 1971. The total budget rises to 1,706,973 dollars, with 197,733 dollars of the increase in Foundation Program funding. The Special Levy climbs to 294,213 dollars, up 60,948 dollars, with The Pas town’s share about 55,121 dollars. Enrollment is estimated at 2,590 students, up 241 from last term, driving the higher costs. The rise reflects foundations and levies to cover growing education needs.

Vehicle Testing Program Resumes in Manitoba

Manitoba resumes compulsory vehicle testing with two units. Unit 1 will operate in Steinbach May 11-28, Morden June 1-14, Carman June 16-24, and Killarney June 29-July 14. Unit 2 will run The Pas May 12-20, Swan River May 26-June 3, and Neepawa June 8. Hours vary seasonally, with standard slots Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Tuesday, Friday.

Tee Pees Plan For Ball Season

The Tee Pees baseball club held its first meeting of the year with 10 in attendance. They discussed coaching duties and suggested several candidates. A decision was made to approach a candidate for the position and to order uniforms early to be ready for a season that typically starts in late May or early June. New members offered ideas to help the club.

Last Wednesday night over 30 duffers attended the Annual Meeting of The Pas Golf Club at Keewatin Community College. Elected to the executive for the coming season were President Barry Effler, Vice President Roland Goldstrand, Treasurer Rey Jackson, Secretary Clifford King. Committee Chairmen listed.

Firemen Called Twice Sunday

The Pas Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to two minor fires on Sunday afternoon. The first call came from the trailer home of Les Pronchuk at 505 Bennell Avenue where yard grass ignited near the trailer skirting and tires. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze using water from the truck.

Willie Fidler Tops Pas Bowling Wind-Up Trophies

Willie Fidler received seven trophies at the Pas Bowling Association annual windup held at Guy Hall on May 1. He again led as top bowler by chalking up 26 300s and won high average, high single, and high triple without handicap. Marvin Mayers tied for high single with a 388.

Dry Kiln Produces 220000 Board Feet at River Sawmills

The dry kilns at River Sawmills near The Pas began full scale production last Thursday with 220 000 board feet of lumber drawn from the kilns. Logs entered at 40 50 percent moisture and exited at about 1 percent after 24 hours in operation. Harold Chernoff, production superintendent, confirms that only the planner and Mill A were active during the start up as the facility scales up.

Lumber sales forge ahead at The Pas plant

The River Sawmills plant at The Pas now produces 142000 board feet of lumber daily, surpassing all Manitoba rivals. The first local shipment of 50000 board feet went to Thompson last week, with shipments now at three cars per day. Sixteen cars have shipped to the United States, Winnipeg, and other Canadian areas, and on April 29 the complex marked its first shipment of kiln dried lumber. Progress on production continues.
