Town Council pushes ahead to improve The Pas by passing planning documents and signing a DREE agreement to fund street paving, storm sewers, a new library, and sanitary upgrades. Construction on a light industrial park proceeds with Tallien Construction clearing and laying lines. 40 new single family lots planned east of Ca.
Dale Scott, town dog catcher, was fired at while driving his panel truck in Timberland Trailer Court last week. A .22 caliber bullet pierced the truck, lodged in the wall near the town crest behind the front door. Police say the shot may have been a stray from nearby bush hunting. investigation continues.
Two women named Shirley Jonas and Myrna Vandermaelen filed papers for the Town Council seat left vacant by Doug McBride who resigned March 7. Both have no prior local political experience and filed before the 2 00 p m Monday deadline.
The Pas Kinsmen and Kinettes host a Mexican Fiesta themed spring dance in Guy Hall this Saturday evening. Kin president Dennis Mosfat dismisses a rumor about attending in a Mexican Jumping Bean costume, noting costumes are optional.
Jack Graham, 82, of The Pas, was hospitalized after a Tuesday morning car pedestrian collision on Fischer Avenue in front of Deter’s Confectionery. He sustained a fractured hip and other injuries and was later moved to Winnipeg hospital in guarded condition after initial treatment at St. Anthony’s. Ronald McDuff, 19, of The Pas, was identified as the driver. police say Graham appeared to walk into the path of the northbound car. Graham, longtime resident, typically crossed Fischer en route to breakfast at the Cambrian Hotel.
Members of The Pas Terminal C N Safety Council attended a St John Ambulance course in The Pas and earned first aid pins at a CN luncheon. Fire Chief Dick Wright led the course with graduates including Chris Seagirs Howie Porter Adam Karpick Paul Smandyck John Cousineau Ben Nerbass Blair Sigurdson Gary Brodgiak Dick Wright Don Lindsay Ed Johannesson Norman Reid Alvin Radcliffe Colin Mitchell Henry Vacheresse Rick Fairbairn.
Yellow trucks from Main Line Industries Ltd. operate in town snapping pictures of sewer lines as part of preliminary pavement work. The goal is to identify needed repairs before paving to ensure a smooth, lasting road surface.
Education Minister Ben Hanuschak announced sharp rises in educational grants for the Kelsey School Division. The reform, under The Public Schools Act, will triple and in some cases quadruple per-student assistance and raise the Education Foundation Program share by five percent. Net provincial education costs will increase by about $14 million, with hopes that local divisions pass savings to property taxpayers. Ron McBryde notes continued coverage on page 11.
The NDP schedules a provincial nominating convention for The Pas Constituency on Friday April 27. The Hon Ron McBryde announces re election bid and will seek votes at the Legion Hall starting 8 PM with Premier Ed Schreyer as guest speaker. Open to the public but only NDP members may vote.
