The Pas District raises Easter Seals money returned to local aid. At present The Pas has 25 cases under the Society for Crippled Children and 44 more in the district. Since inception 97 cases closed. The Pas Kinsmen Club runs the Easter Seal Campaign along the Bay Line and expects higher returns.
Manitoba officials revealed last week that heat at the Cranberry Portage radar site has been shut off. Premier Duff Roblin spoke with Ottawa to ensure no harm to local services, with talks continuing on base facility use and continued water and power supply.
The Alydro Board and Utilities Minister Maitland Steinkopf notify The Pas of a reduced power tariff. The rate lowers the last block to 1 1/2¢ per KWH from 2¢, saving about $1.50 monthly for the average consumer, while other blocks remain 8¢ and 2¢ and 11/24¢. The fare does not cover electric heating in The Pas area.
The Pas Indian Band plans a liquor referendum at the Reserve by late May if the by election for a vacant Band Council seat results in a pro referendum outcome. Ottawa approval for the by election is expected soon and two special police constables for the Reserve await RCMP endorsement.
The Pas council debated dog control after a six year old boy was badly mauled by three dogs in front of his home last Monday. Councillor Bernstrom, police committee chair, spoke on the dog question and the council’s response.
A cigarette prompted a late Saturday fire at Dembinsky s Department Store with Mrs Edna Whitaker noting the blaze at 11 30 pm. Fire fighters arrived as flames began to catch the building frame. A separate Sunday 10 30 pm call was a false alarm about dogs claimed from the pound, dogs said to have entered from outside town limits. The town faced dog catcher staffing issues and an employee paid 19 weekly while laid off. Continued on Page 1.
St Anthony's Hospital in The Pas aims to rebuild its local blood donor group which now lists 25 to 30 volunteers. The drive prioritizes O Negative and O Positive donors. Interested individuals should call the hospital between 8 am and 5 am to arrange a blood test.
The Pas Credit Union members approved a three and a half percent dividend on shares at the annual meeting held last Friday in Nor-Lite Hall. Share capital has risen sixfold since the previous year. Ted Neill was elected president with Alfred Lundy as vice president. Bill Shipley serves as secretary to the board. George Hogg and Stanley Wright are board members. Mrs. H. Neel and Mervin Berghind were elected to the credit committee, with Wilf Bigelow remaining to complete his term.
The Pas board outlines 1963 expenditures totaling 3464 434. 00 with last year at 393 690. 00 before grants and revenue. A special school levy of 183 340. 00 is planned, $2 621. 00 above last year, funding a deficit of 10 000. The town to raise about 15 000 with a three mill increase. Teacher salaries rise 28 000 and three new teachers are planned for fall term.
The Pas Figure Skating Club staged its annual Ice Review at The Pas Arena over the weekend with 123 members ranging from age three to forty plus. Directed by Louise Lawrence, the one and a half hour program featured varied age and group classifications, with a Gold Star group photo and the Lommerse Trophy awarded to Dianne Turner for most advancement in a year.
About 50 delegates attended the Churchill Federal Liberal Constituency Association annual meeting in The Pas. Pat Ferg of Flin Flon was reelected president with Jack Johnson of The Pas as 1st vice president. Len Shuttleworth spoke substituting for Gildas Molgat urging preparedness for a federal election and predicting Liberal victory. Ferg noted losses in Swan River and redistribution hopes for northern areas.
The East er weekend features three exhibition bantam hockey games at The Pas Arena. The AB Bantam Allstars face Lynn Lake AB Allstars Friday and Saturday evenings, with a Sunday 1 30 p m game. Admission is 50 cents for adults and 95 cents for children.
