Town council debated hiring an extra constable amid RCMP cost concerns. Mayor Trager estimated over 6600 dollars yearly and opposed the increase, while other councillors warned against taxpayer burden and discussed revisiting police policy.
Kathleen Smith, one of two teens who swam Clearwater Lake last summer, will travel to Brandon over Easter for a life saving and swimming instruction course. The program uses seven instructors and includes predeparture fitness training with Gordon Harris. Kathleen may qualify others from Brandon.
A lighthearted program titled Bal Ockey Night set for Saturday April at The Pas Arena will feature a broomball game between Kinsmen and Elks along with Kinettes and Royal Purple in support of the Society for Crippled Children and Adults and the Easter Seals Campaign. The event is organized by local service clubs with proceeds aiding the campaigns.
The Pas team led by Bob Munroe Brynne Jones Rosalind Ridings and Aaron Berg won 225 to 180 against Rivers East in Winnipeg last Saturday to become Manitoba’s first rural school to win more than two Reach for the Top competitions. They advance to Winnipeg April 2 to face Grant Park Vincent Massey winner in the final flight. Principal Pat Claggett notes city teams have regular noon practice and many teams have coaches.
The Town of The Pas will hire a first year physical education student from May 1 to September 4 at $1800. The student will coordinate a summer program of physical education and recreation in The Pas. Council approved the plan, noting expected benefit to local youth.
Kin leaders outline a door to door Easter Seal drive in The Pas Manitoba to support rehabilitation for 33 local children. The canvass runs Thursday April 1 with letters sent to all homes and clubs to cover Friday April 2 and Saturday April 3.
The Passions Club sponsors a local swimming pool course for instructors. If enough candidates apply, the course will run July 12 to 16. Interested swimmers should contact the Club by writing Box 422, The Pas, before March 30. Lions officials in Winnipeg must be advised on pool inclusion.
The Pas Herald will become the sole weekly newspaper in The Pas after acquiring the Northern Mail. The Herald will keep two offices, publish Wednesdays, and unify paid circulation with Northern Mail. Dennis Popaden and Cherlyn Adams join as staff. deadlines: advertising Monday 2 pm, news 4 pm.
The Pas Figure Skating Club presented Fantasy on Ice before 414 Saturday and 497 Sunday audiences. Peter Pan opened the show with Heather South as Peter Pan and Beverly Shipley as Tinker Bell.
Manitoba Legislature approves amendments to the municipal act increasing flexibility for funding centennial projects. Current plan permits a levy of one mill per year for 1963 to 1970. New proposals offer an alternative financing method for municipalities to raise funds.
