Rotary March for Museum Trophy Awarded

Rotary Club held a special meeting last week where members received walking certificates and the concrete trophy for raising the most money for the project. Representatives from participating clubs attended the event as the contest continued.

Town The Pas consider merging fire departments

The Town of The Pas and The Pas Indian Reserve may form a combined fire department. Federal officials suggested the plan at a meeting with Town Council last week. Provincial officials agreed it could reduce costs if feasible. Council members supported the idea in principle if the economics can be worked out.

Town Council Cleared Most Of Arena Hold-Back

The town council voted to pay off $19 000 of the $24 000 hold-back on the new Arena, leaving about $5 000. The payment to Central Canadian Structures Limited was authorized with cheques directed to subcontractors still owed funds.

Co-ordinator Named To The Pas Area

Premier Ed Schreyer announces James McCallum as provincial co ordinator for the special development program in The Pas area. McCallum, former Manitoba Development Authority and Education official, now with Indian Affairs and Northern Development in Vancouver, will oversee community services to manpower training programs.

Swimming Pool Adopted By Rec Commission

The Kelsey Recreation Commission formally adopted the swimming pool project and named Jim Goodridge chairman of the pool project. Jack Berg was named general chairman. Mrs. Isabelle Turk secretary. They plan to present a general operating budget to Town Council before month’s end for 1970 operating costs.

Minister Orders Housing Check In The Pas

The Herald reports a directive from Rene Toupin to inspect 10 houses in The Pas. Norm Kerwin states the checks occurred about two weeks ago and a report was sent to Winnipeg. He would not reveal the owner and said no further instructions have been issued.

The Pas Faces 2.3 Million Funding Debate

At a planning meeting with federal provincial officials, The Pas council heard that the town’s 2.3 million funding will not be awarded as a pure grant. Attendees included J D Collinson J R Lane Jack Giles Nick Carter and Frank Beehler and Scott McDonald.

Mayor protests province uses Pas funds for others

Mayor Harry Trager says the province is diverting federal funds earmarked for The Pas toward other areas. He cites Ottawa reports of 2.3 million for sewer and water and 2 million for schools, insisting the money was intended for The Pas alone. Councillor Ed Johanson notes the town requested 2.3 million and leaves other uses to the province. A letter from Premier Schreyer hints at possible joint works funding if The Pas shares costs.

Dogs Win Round as Town Reshapes Dog Catcher Plan

The town clashed with dogs again after a council move to place the dog catcher on disputed grounds. At a prior meeting the council approved hiring a full time catcher, but the position was not advertised, prompting a new resolution from Audrey Batchelor, head of Protective Services.
