Men’s Bonspiel This Weekend At The Pas Curling Event

The Pas hosts its annual men’s bonspiel this weekend with 52 rinks, first draw Friday at 6 00 pm and finals Sunday evening. Three events sponsor prizes from Profie’s Furniture Carroll Motors and The Gateway Hotel. Out of town teams include Snow Lake with eight rinks and Thompson six, Cranberry Portage four, Flin Flon three, plus entries from Hudson Bay Lake Lenore and Darlingford. Darlingford’s Buck McKennitt is among noted rural curlers. Prizes total 1509 dollars with silverware for winners.

Road Starts Work Linking The Pas And Cormorant

The Manitoba Government Depart ment of Public Works begins a road project connecting The Pas with Cormorant. On February 8 The Pas Chamber of Commerce and DPW engineers met Cormorant officials by bombardier to discuss construction. Municipal engineer J M D MacDonald noted the railway aligned route could be built by machine or local labour, and recommended local labour. A Cormorant crew began right of way work toward Mile 34 while a DPW crew starts at Mile 26.

Town Faces Severe Housing Shortage For Vocational School

The Pas faces a housing shortage as the new vocational school opens in September. Dr George Johnson education minister asks for thirteen 3 bedroom homes a 20 unit family friendly apartment block and five bachelor flats. Town offers land with sewer water lines and upcoming street paving. Mayor Trager urges immediate contact for local residents and invites out of town contractors to assess the site.

Ted Tadda Named Head of Pas Centennial Celebrations

Ted Tadda was appointed chairman of The Pas centennial events to be held August 3 4 5 1967 by The Pas Town Council. He will coordinate a local celebration aligned with the national centennial caravan visit, inviting service and fraternal groups to appoint delegates and plan kickoff meetings.

Government Grantee Help Teachers Seek Pay Raise

Negotiations between teachers and the Board began about three weeks ago with secrecy. The Herald learns the teachers originally asked for a 12 percent rise on a one year contract, while the Board countered with 10 percent for a two year term. The average raise appears about 300 dollars per teacher, higher for some. Class 4 certified high school teachers see about 600 dollars more. elementary teachers about 2600 dollars annually. A province wide rise is anticipated with Flin Flon already negotiating a new scale and Thompson offering 17 percent versus a 24 percent request.

Hospital Town Talks Additions At St. Anthony’s Ado

Hospital representatives led by Dr. R. Walton and Bill Chapman met with The Pas Town Council to discuss a 2.5 to 3 million expansion and renovation. The council agreed in principle, planning to present a by law to ratepayers for the town’s share.

Lamb Airways to Add Twin Otter for Arctic Bush Work

Lambs Bay Turbo Prop Thomas Lamb Airways Limited of The Pas Manitoba selects the de Havilland Canada Twin Otter turbine twin to boost its bush operations. Deliveries set for October making Lamb Airways the first Manitoban operator with this aircraft for northern charter use. The 16 passenger or 4000 lb cargo capacity aircraft can run on floats or skis and handles cold temperatures with ease.

Three Students Suspended Over Train Liquor Incident

Three students from Margaret Barbour Collegiate are suspended for six weeks after a report of liquor consumption on a CNR train to Lynn Lake while traveling to the Regional Bonspiel. The suspension ends before March exams and class resumes. Authorities discuss limiting links from The Pas and Flin Flon to two per school. About $70 of liquor reportedly involved with part consumed on the train. Some officials say the conduct showed fear of premeditated action.

The CBC program Telescope features Tom Lamb and his sons with adventures across northern Manitoba. Filmed last spring by Western Films of Winnipeg, the segment airs Thursday evenings at 9:30 p.m. locally.

Overture Date Changed For Pas Concert

The Pas Overture Concert Association moves the third and final concert of the season to Monday March 7 at eight in Guy Hall. Miss Claudie Lindsey the Young Mezzo Soprano will perform, promising a remarkable voice to delight the audience.

The final Overture concert of the season will be open to the public. Admission to the concert featuring Miss Claudia Lindsey will be $2.50. Tickets will be available at the door Monday March 7 at Guy Hall.

School Fair Set For Monday In The Pas

As part of Education Week, the Kelsey Division of the Manitoba Teachers Society sponsors a School Fair Monday March 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. in MB Ct Auditorium. Displays include handwriting, essays, art, projects, notebooks, and poetry. Open to the public. children must be accompanied by parents. Trophies awarded at 9 p.m.

TransAir Announces New Mid Week Fares

TransAir Limited reports the Air Transport Board approved 30 day weekday round trip excursion fares for Northern Manitoba routes including The Pas Thompson Churchill Flin Flon and Lynn Lake. Fares apply Tuesdays Wednesdays or Thursdays for both directions and run 30 days from the first trip. Children under 12 receive a 50 percent discount. Continued on page.
