On a street being leveled near the Saskatchewan River, Rosaire uncovered a human leg bone and rib fragments, later a skull wrapped in birch bark. Police concluded the bones are years old and likely Indigenous. officials plan to obtain a coroner's certificate for reburial.
The Elks Lodge of The Pas announces the Boychenko Trust Account created from a former resident and farmer’s bequest to support children’s playgrounds and Little League equipment in The Pas. Mr Boychenko left Carrot River area in 1955. He died recently in Brandon. The Elks plan purchases for Little League and Edwards Street playground equipment.
Fernand St Pierre remanded without plea on mischief charge after an incident at the Nip House Friday night around 7 30. Eyewitnesses say a man ran out with a cash register, dropped it on the street, then returned inside causing a disturbance as money spilled. Edward Donald Lee of The Pas was fined 100 dollars and costs 4 for supplying to a minor, the third such conviction in The Pas in the past month.
A fragment recalls 150 years ago when a settler believed diamonds and rubies could be found along the Nelson River in northern Manitoba. It mentions urging Lord Selkirk to secure land grants along the river from Hudson Bay to Lake Winnipeg, and notes Rev Charles Bourke and Miles Macdonnell’s roles with Selkirk settlers.
A four month old Cedar Lake child, Denise George, was revived after a dramatic emergency last Sunday. The Pas medical team transported the baby by boat and air to St. Anthony’s Hospital where artificial respiration was maintained for two hours, with four staff aiding. By Sunday evening the infant was much improved and under observation.
Calvin Rowley won first prize a rod and reel donated by Carrolls Hardware for a 5 lb 10 oz pickerel at the mouth of The Pas River. Jim Richards took second prize a rod and reel donated by Kobars Hardware for a 13 3 4 lb pike on the Carrot River. A few large trout were caught on Clearwater Lake but no entries for the trolling rod and reel prize by Marshall Wells. prize to be disposed of later.
Manitoba agriculture minister George Hutton will visit The Pas on Thursday to discuss the Saskeram area with interested parties. The meeting time and location will be announced in next week's Herald. Chamber of Commerce asks parties to prepare for the session following Ducks Unlimited dam rebuild talks.
Bohna-Litwin began removing their equipment from the proposed Canadian Kodiak refinery site east of The Pas on Sunday. Canadian Kodiak faces financing delays, prompting contractors to relocate gear. The move does not rule out a future refinery, but delays may extend at least a year after an estimated half million dollars invested.
Rumors say a British Columbia government move to seize BC Power dampened American investor enthusiasm for broader Canadian opportunities. Details remain unconfirmed though reports link the takeover to postponed funding and stalled projects.
The 45 ton all steel Mundy J 1, owned by Keystone Fisheries, launched on the Saskatchewan River at The Pas last Saturday. Built at Riverton Boat Works and brought to The Pas in sections, it will run between The Pas and Moose Lake with plans to extend to Grand Rapids. Captain Henry DelaTande, with 15 years at Keystone, will command a two man crew. The vessel features passenger cabin, galley, refrigerated hold for 30,000 pounds of fish, and is decked in red white and blue for a celebratory launch attended by John Bouviar and about 100 passengers who toured the river.
The serviceman’s vote in the federal election for Churchill elected F. L. Bud Jobin Liberal with 108 votes. Bud Simpson PC and Florence Matthews trailed with 10 497 for Simpson and 3 735 for Matthews.
Mr and Mrs C P Woods of Houston Texas visited The Pas en route to Flin Flon and the Trout Festival. Norville Leslie led a local tour for the Chamber of Commerce. Woods, a past contributor of photos on The Pas history, presented hammered aluminum trays to Mayor Harry Trager and Chamber president Bart Kobar at a Chamber stag event.
Mayor Harry Trager welcomed CBC to The Pas as the CBCs TV transmission service officially opened. He praised the northern province for progress and urged northerners to keep pushing for full access, calling the ceremony a jubilee year gift to the community.
A small caravan departs Winnipeg for Flin Flan with a 1 foot statue of Josiah Flintabatey Flonatin among its main cargo. It is expected to pass through The Pos around 6 30 tonight.
In 1913 Tom Creighton and prospectors sought Flin Flon near Churchill and uncovered an English novel "Sunless City." They connected to Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin, an amateur scientist who led a group with a bottomless lake lore and built a one man submarine to explore it.
Freeman Compton 34, a native of Buchans Newfoundland, will be based at The Pas Manitoba starting July 1. He joins Tate provincial service and reports to Jean Lagasse as director of community development services. Expansion planned later in Churchill and Grand Rapids areas to guide Indians and Metis communities in local problem solving.
Freeman Compton quotes Mr Christianson saying a development program requires local cooperation. He notes funding comes via federal provincial agreements with the Department of Indian Affairs. The article continues on page 13.
The LaVerendrye Motel will come under new management July 1. Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Roy of Brandon and their family will move to The Pas to take over the motel dining room and Portage Room. Paul Fouilliard will stay to pursue boat trailer and mobile rental ideas and hunting guiding services.
Registration for swimming lessons and adult diving classes will be held Saturday June 30 from 10 p m to 12 p m at the Winton Swimming Pool. Those interested may register then or contact Jim Goodridge at MA3 3848 for details.
