The Pas Herald reports forest tent caterpillars have moved to the eastern outskirts of town, noticeable around Paul Avenue as they climb onto houses. They pose little harm to poplar trees and may be sprayed with DDT. by month’s end an abundance of orange moths is expected.
The Pas reopens August 30 after a one day earlier closure for the Trappers Festival. Education minister Ste Wart McLean declares August 31 as a holiday, leaving schools closed until September 4, a Tuesday after Labour Day. One day remains for catch up before the festival holiday, with continued notes to page 2.
Jebb leaves The Pas to join River Exhibition from 24 to 30. Labatt's sponsors three main booths featuring Flin Flon Trout Festival Swan River Rodeo and The Pas Trappers Festival. Mrs Jebb will display Indian handicraft with Kerri Furs and Peggy Green Eve Dunn assist for shifts and provide information.
The Pas Lumber Company donated 1800 to the Senior Citizens Housing project, over the local 10,000 goal. Funds will furnish the center living room area once the structure is completed, per Kinsmen Club liaison Tom Hasker citing a note from George Doem.
Delegates totaling eight attended the Elks Convention with final sessions planned for Saturday night. Officials from Grand Lodge led by Grand Exalted Ruler and Grand Secretary manage visits and resolutions prepared for presentation at Calgary next month. The Pas lodge contributed 281.07 to the Purple Cross Fund aiding children under 16 through Elks Social Betterment programs.
Manitoba cabinet discusses an agreement to rebuild Bracken Dam and raise Saskeram Lake water levels. Dicks Unlimited threatens withdrawal if the agreement is not ratified, possibly affecting Manitoba. Major dispute centers on the lake level target 853/0 and lease length as of last Wednesday’s Chamber of Commerce view.
At the Clearwater Lake Trout Derby held during the Flin Flon Trout Festival, winners claimed the top four prizes with prizes including a car. Fishermen from Vickery's Lodge dominated with four of the top catches, including notable entries by Roy Vickery and Morton Bechedahi. Ella Langlois and Lloyd Johnson are among locals noted for big catches in recent years.
The Pas area residents conduct ground and air searches for Vic Hagborg's car stolen Saturday night from his trailer home at Bignell and Seventh. The blue and white Manitoba plate 27779 car held two expensive tools, a transit level and an Ingersoll Rand drill, which are missing with the vehicle. Hagborg says keys were not left in the car.
