Thirty seven Manitoba MLAs attended a tour of The Pas Forestry Complex Friday. The procession of four buses was halted at the main gate by local businessmen who blocked entry, delaying the visit of the Legislature members and accompanying press.
Michael Bentley filed a counterclaim near ten thousand dollars against Churchill Forest Industries Limited In Receivership. The counterclaim followed a notice to vacate a CFI suite where the Bentley family resides served in late March. The matter heads to trial on June 23.
About 300 sons, mothers and fathers attended the Minor Hockey windup at Guy Hall last Wednesday night. Murray Anderson, formerly of The Pas, appeared as a notable guest during the event.
Keewatin Community College The Pas held its fourth annual convocation and exercises last Saturday. More than 265 students earned certificates in business education mineral sciences technology vocational and industrial trades and basic skill training. Only 75 graduates attended due to earlier commitments.
The college announces two new courses starting in September. Surveying Technician, a one year program to train survey instrument men for the North’s expanding industries, requires Grade 11 math English and physics or Level 1 BTS D. The second program is Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanics.
Antoinette O’Boyle advocates a day care centre in The Pas and says she has pursued officials for two years. She and Dr and Mrs Martin O’Boyle are expanding their Halcrow Avenue home to house the centre but face permit denials citing proximity to a neighbor and regulation concerns. The matter was discussed with planning leaders and the building inspector, with initial assurances but renewed obstacles after a supplier tried to obtain a permit. Continued on page 8.
Manitoba group NewStart announces a new board of directors. Appointed from The Pas is J. W. Kennedy owner of the Gulf Oil bulk plant. Gordon Lathiin of The Pas Reserve is reappointed. Dr. RC Blain of Ottawa is named a director in the Department of Regional Economic Expansion.
Manitoba NewStart executive director Al Loveridge states honesty pays when dealing with news media and citizens. He emphasizes transparency in an organization handling public funds and says there is nothing to hide in NewStart.
The annual M B C Field Day sunlit competition crowned Lynda Madarash as Field Day Queen representing Gamma House. First princess was Linda Solochuk of Delta House as judges scored tickets sold money raised and personalities.
Father Trudeau of Guy Indian School landed a 46 1/4 pound lake trout from Clearwater Lake last Sunday May 30 while trolling with a steel line and a wobbler. Clearwater Lake is banned by the Flin Flon Trout Festival this year as a participatory lake.
