Shelter belts aid farming and aesthetics in Manitoba fields
A well planned field shelter belt system benefits individual farms by slowing heat waves and warming soils earlier in spring while staying warm through summer. A single row of mixed ash elm and caragana can shield windward for 10 feet per foot of height and leeward for 20 feet per foot, with rows every 40 rods providing protection. Weed control in belts is crucial early on, and methods include removing center sweeps to weed both sides, side delivery rakes, and post establishment chemical treatments costing 2.50 to 7.50 per foot mile. A local tree planting program meeting will be announced soon.
