Charlie Smith, a longtime plumber and furnace man in The Pas, explains in a letter to the editor the strain on heating and plumbing firms during severe cold. He notes long hours, scarce trained workers, and limited stock as frost damage grows since December, urging schools and vocational centers to train more technicians to prevent deeper outages.
The Dawlerettes perform this evening at the Margaret Barbour Collegiate Auditorium with curtain at 8:00 p.m. Admission is 1.50 for adults and 0.74 for children and students. Pas Overture Concerts Association members pay 1.00 for adults and 0.50 for children and students. They tour the north by bus and plan further shows in Flin Flon and Thompson to raise funds.
Two departments, Kelsey Recreation Commission and Fire Chief Tom Barjey, apply for a total grant of 31 986.50 Canadian dollars. The recreation group requests 17 150 for wages to employ 37 people through May and June, including building an outdoor rink and arena repairs. The fire chief seeks 10 764 for six workers January through April to widen the garbage dump site, remove brush, and fence parts to handle rising waste volumes. continuation note indicates continuation on page id.
World Champion dog racer John Calvert claimed first place and a $1,000 prize in the North West Pacific Championship at Prince George B C over January 22 and 23. It marked his second consecutive win in the event, with Raymond Cook and Bill Carriere finishing second and third. Calvert used nine dogs, racing 25 miles each day, and plans one more race before The Pas World Championship Dog Derby during the Trappers Festival February 16-19.
Frank Parker and Earl Nelson have not given up their bid for a convenience store at Cathedral Avenue and 7th Street in The Pas. They hired Ferg and Sing to press their case after Town Planning denied the proposal citing the need for spot zoning and council backing.
Town Council and The Pas Indian Band have pursued an agreement to develop a light industrial park on southern Indian land. Negotiations continue with the Band as the council seeks an extension from DREE to advance the project.
Two anglers, Mary de Beer and Courtney Parker, hauled oversized lake trout from Clearwater Lake in early January near Carpenter's Lodge. Both fish weighed 28 pounds and measured 42 inches, with Parker’s trout slightly girthier by ½ inch adding 3½ pounds. Parker began ice fishing at 1 20 p.m in approximately 35 feet of water using white jigs.
Ernie Koch resigns as Councillor of The Pas citing work commitments and lack of time for council duties. Mayor Jack Kennedy notes a by election if council doesn t call one. Koch was elected in 1970 to fill Russ Tawse s seat. his two year term would have ended in November.
The strike by air controllers barely affects local travel as Canadian National Railways notes slight passenger gains on sleeping cars but no need for extra coaches to Winnipeg. Warmth and delays persist with trains late due to a two week cold spell and a big storm in British Columbia. Trans Air stalls with few flights into The Pas and Bus traffic to Winnipeg drops except Friday.
The 25th Northern Manitoba Trap pers' Festival will feature daily power toboggan races from February 18 to 19 at the exhibition grounds west of town. John Jebsen and Ernie Smith lead organization with Tr ack'n Trail Club help, planning a 25 mile cross country event starting at the Saskatchewan River. A wind up is scheduled for Saturday night February 19, and a bonspiel may be added if arranged with The Pas Curling Club.
The Pas Chamber of Commerce and the Northern Manitoba Trappers Festival have both received requests from the National Library for copies of their publications The Pas a History Adventure and Romance and the 1972 Trappers Festival Silver Anniversary Booklet written by Sid Wilton.
