The Pas Progressive Conservative Association will hold its annual meeting tomorrow night in the Legion Hall. The guest speaker is the Honorable Ma Stein bop minister of public utilities and secretary.
Hon Maitland Steinkopf chairs the Manitoba Centennial Corporation tasked with Manitoba's part in the 1967 national centennial and provincial planning for 1970. Local member Jack Carroll and Bud Simpson MP visit as delegates from Birch River and other southern constituencies plus Cranberry Portage.
The Department of Transport may close Clearwater Lake Airport to heavy aircraft in April for a repeat of last year’s four month restriction. TransAir would lose about 38000 dollars if the shuttle to Flin Flon is used again, with a limousine transfer for passengers between The Pas and Flin Flon.
Delegation from The Pas attended Flin Flon Chamber meeting to compare electricity costs if The Pas and possibly Flin Flon receive Hydro power. Mayor Uarry Trager led the group with Sid Wilton and Jack Graham. The Pas table shows 857 Kwhrs monthly use costing 19.03 including 10 percent discount. rural Manitoba 11.76. Winnipeg 8.97. The Town Council approved a pay raise from 30 to 50 dollars monthly with a 900 dollar annual mayoral honorarium. Audrey Batchelor opposed the measure. Stan Reid named deputy mayor, Bill Martin town solicitor, Derek Taylor dog catcher with ten dollar weekly bump. Trager and Bernstrom named town planning representatives. Simon Arsenault seeks another term. Four citizens to join the planning commission. A Carroll Motors bid of 2718 dollars won a new police patrol car.
Seven youths appeared in Juvenile Court last Saturday on ten liquor related charges. Six pled guilty while one denied theft of liquor and unlawful possession. Judge Macphee remanded all seven to January 20 for Crown action. he noted Manitoba’s age rules could place them in Adult Court.
The Manitoba Telephone System says it will not move its commercial offices from Flin Flon to The Pas despite rumors. Spokesmen told The HERALD no transfer is planned and Flin Flon Chamber of Commerce protested to Winnipeg officials citing Flin Flon’s larger population and city status.
The Manitoba Telephone System reports Christmas Day traffic at The Pas with 3043 calls, up 34 percent from 1962. Boxing Day added 1489 calls, up 13 percent from 1962. Most calls went within Manitoba. The Pas originated the farthest call to Honolulu. Montreal handled calls to Europe and the U K. Vancouver handled Australia and Japan. Thirty operators were on duty in The Pas.
Public Works Chairman Alex Wilchowy urged abolishing the assistant engineer position at the town's first New Year meeting. He said the role was unnecessary and hinted at further staff reductions, as leaders consider consolidating departments under one administration.
Last Friday evening the Teen Canteen presented a $75 check to the Kinsmen to offset costs of the Senior Citizens Housing project set to open next month. The 13 units will be beside Kelsey School. Tesa Canteen president Bryan Harkness and treasurer Ron Rice handed over the cheque to Mr. Chun.
The Pas issued permits totaling 1 394 280 in 1963, well above 1962. Nine dwelling permits valued at 93 500, six institutional permits at 1 234 000, private garages and sheds 3 100 with 10 permits, one new business block permit at 25 000, repairs and alterations for dwellings 10 980 with seven permits and six for business at 25 700.
The Pas taxi operators told Town Council that no more taxi licenses should be issued, citing 17 licenses issued in 1963, only 14 cabs operating due to a downturn, and urging referrals of new applicants to the Motor Vehicles Branch of the Public Utility Board to prevent over-saturation.
The Primate of the Anglican Church in Canada Bishop Howard J. Clack of Rupertsland will visit The Pas March 1 accompanied by Bishop Norris of Branvon. The gathering will include clergy and lay representatives from Anglican Churches north to Swan River Manitoba with Archbishop Clark delivering the main address. Archbishop Clark recently presided over the Pan Anglican Congress in Ottawa.
