Town Council authorizes exploration and study on obtaining water from wells. D Lowther to perform drilling work and report findings with three wells proposed including two in use and one standby. A $5,000 budgeted for the study and $10,000 for leak repairs planned in 1970 estimates.
Judge Peter Taraska of the Court of Canadian Citizenship told a The Pas meeting that local applications had been almost nil but he now expects a notable increase. He and regional administrator J O Sleeman urged readiness for a future Citizenship Court in The Pas with forms available at the Court House.
The Associate Medical Clinic announced five new doctors are en route to The Pas to practice, all currently outside Canada and mostly from England. Immigration quota delays hindered early arrival, with Bud Simpson MP for Churchill pursuing the matter with the federal Immigration Department.
Welders Supplies Limited announces a new branch in The Pas effective February 20, 1970. The store will warehouse gases arc welders electrodes equipment and clothing from 252 Fischer Avenue. John Makowaychuk named representative in charge of The Pas branch.
Letters from Newman MacLean and Associates representing Central Canadian Structures Limited demand the release of the remaining $21 000 held back for deficiencies. The firm states remedy costs will not exceed $5 000 and that payment should go to the client and unpaid sub contractors jointly with interest of 10 percent. The council is urged to avoid withholding until weather affects conditions. CONTINUED ON PAGE 13.
TransAir is planning a new jet centered schedule aiming to start April 30 with a 737 Boeing Jet in operation. A Toronto to Winnipeg flight would extend to Thompson Churchill Lynn Lake Flin Flon The Pas and back to Toronto, with a parallel Winnipeg to Thompson route featuring six days a week service and tri weekly stops at Norway House using YS-11 turboprops.
The Herald reports scarce copies of the 23rd Trappers' Festival edition remain this week. Extra copies were published for both festival editions and February sales rose to 3250, up 450 from the usual weekly run.
The Pas town council backed a move to raise taxi fares from 75 cents to one dollar within town limits. Councillor Audrey Batchelor supported the increase as overdue after eight years. The proposal awaits approval by the provincial Utility Board before taking effect. No new cabs were approved. applications may be considered later if demand proves the need.
Norman Lee finally landed a 29 pounds 6 ounces lake trout at Clearwater Lake on Sunday afternoon after a 15 minute fight. He had previously hooked a larger fish that could not pass the ice hole. He plans to try again after another big catch last month.
The council approved taxing exemption for a former Hewitt estate building to be used by Jehovah’s Witnesses as a church. The exemption applies if the property is used strictly for worship and not as a dwelling. Councillor Audrey Batchelor opposed the resolution. The discussion continued with Councillor Russ Tawse challenging her stance.
Police logged three break-ins over the weekend with limited losses. The Occidental Cafe reported cigarettes and a small amount of cash. Mary Duncan School noted $35 missing. Carroll Motors was entered but no confirmed theft. Investigations continue.
Residents of St Pauls enjoyed a pancake breakfast on Sunday organized by the Game and Fish Association. The charity donated all ingredients from Festival leftovers plus extra supplies to ensure plenty for attendees.
The Department of Mines and Natural Resources seeks to rename Mawdesley Wildlife Area after Tom Lamb with an Order in Council. Backed by officials and The Pas Wildlife Association the district east of The Pas would expand to include more land on the south end to honor Lamb’s wildlife preservation work.
Eight members were appointed to the new 11 member Kelsey Recreation Commission. The Pas Indian Band and the Local Government District of Consol are to be asked to provide representation. The group will oversee all recreation in The Pas and review Recreation Director applications.
The Rural Detachment of the RCMP warns motorists that starting March 1st all drivers on public highways without 1970 plates will be prosecuted.
