Nelson hydro project to boost northern development in Manitoba
Premier Roblin says the Nelson development will spur stepped up activity on the Hudson Bay Route affecting many centres. It will attract more people to Manitoba and create sustained work in heating, engineering, and transportation. Manitoba Hydro contracts require local employment first, then Manitoba, before outside workers. The project, costing over one billion dollars, would be the province’s largest single undertaking.

Watershed Scope of Nelson River Hydro Potential
Manitoba eyes harnessing the Nelson River for hydro power, leveraging a watershed over 410000 square miles and a diversion from the Churchill to exceed half a million square miles. The Nelson’s 400 mile flow to Hudson Bay could yield up to 5000000 kilowatts, with reliable year round runoff from headwaters and large tributaries including Saskatchewan, Red, Assiniboine and Winnipeg rivers.
