Lid Theatre management announces closure effective December 19 each week on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The schedule also omits midweek matinee on Saturdays and shifts to Mondays and Tuesdays for remaining operations.
Winnipeg mayor Stephen Juba and party visited The Pas for the Lions Charter Night with 300 attendees. They traveled 14 stops promoting Winnipeg and the Northern Manitoba Trappers Festival. Mayor Juba won a squaw wrestling challenge against Mayor Harry Trager amid festival crowds and was treated to Miss The Pas queen pageant and curling club hospitality.
Mr. Carroll spoke at a public meeting in The Pas sponsored by the Progressive Conservative Association. He announced a planned Technical School at The Pas to train hospital technicians and mechanics, aimed at northern Manitoba, and urged support for his re election bid. He outlined past government actions and future plans, but gave no construction dates.
Liberal candidate support from Adam Dominick is highlighted as Mr. Molgat accuses the Tories of political road building. He calls for a province wide highway planning board and questions northern road timelines, including Thompson access and projects to Grand Rapids and The Pas.
The Pas council heard that November welfare payments were low. Welfare officer Tom Clark cited local labor on a new women’s jail project as a helping factor while noting low payments to the Provincial Welfare Office. He also mentioned a winter works program in bush clearing at Clearwater Lake as the reason.
Mr Richards now resides in Prince Albert and works in mining exploration and development. He told a Thursday audience that was his first political appearance in 15 years. Also spoke were Robert Walker Saskatchewan Attorney General and NDP candidate Rachel Shewchuk.
Mayor Stephen Juba urged The Pas to develop genuine Indian handicrafts for sale in Winnipeg, saying The Pas is the logical Manitoba center and souvenirs could quickly fill a Winnipeg store. He spoke to 300 at Lions Charter Night and noted local beadwork and fur craft as examples of potential products.
The Pas faces a heavy heating fuel bill as bids were opened for the water treatment plant. Four tenders were submitted with Northern Petroleum offering 13.5 cents per unit in a sealed bid before telegrams suggested a further half cent increase.
At a Dec ember meeting of The Pas Library Auxiliary a $750 cheque was presented to Mrs. McRory by Mr. T. Hasker. The Pas Lumber Co. donated the funds for the purchase of books. The library, formed in 1961, grew from about 200 books loaned from the University Extension Library to 2,300 books in a Courthouse room. Rotary Club donated shelves and paint. many books came from The Pas citizens, Flin Flon Library, University of North Dakota, and $100 donated by the Lions Club. The library has been open five days a week for years.
Mrs. C. L. McRory is appointed to the Public Library Advisory Board for Manitoba. The board includes members across the province to guide library operations, recognizing McRory’s key role in forming and sustaining the local library and the province's growing library system.
