Fire Chief Tom Earley notes water lines run to the Technical School at the foot of the hill. Town engineer Adam Sus reports a 40 year old combined storm sewer on the Avenue and proposes a separate storm line to reduce floods. He warns 12 inch run off lines could back up sewage into basements and will inspect Second and Third streets.
Bishop Paul Dumouchel O M I will lead a Pas delegation to Rome in early September for the fourth and final session of the Ecumenical Conference. Rev Father J Chaput O M I will go to Rome in the New Year as a delegate to the conference representing the Oblate Fathers 9000 priests worldwide. Father R Rho Provincial Director will attend as a Director.
A group of parents from Barrows Mafeking Baden Westgate Pelican Rapids and Duck Bay will tour the new Cranberry Portage northern high school this September. Education officials will explain facilities and course offerings as the former Mid-Canada military base becomes a residential high school for northern students.
Ray Zawacky of The Pas Golf Club won the sixth annual open northern sand green championship at Swan River by one stroke. He shot 39 on the first nine and 35 on the second, with a key two on the fourth nine. Flin Flon and Yorkton previously won the title.
Mr and Mrs Tom Smith celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary returning from Virden Man with children and relatives from Winnipeg Oakville and other cities. Gifts included china and a television set. Attendees included officials John G Diefenbaker Duff Roblin J B Carroll Bud Simpson H Trager, with tributes from The Pas Progressive Conservative Association and friends from Toronto Montreal Vancouver and more.
Councillor Don Cargenie warned of many homeowners in new sections ignoring town water lines. He said several hold-outs avoid installing taps despite petitions for sewer and water. Mayor Harry Trager called the issue serious as council weighs the ending water delivery contract.
The Pas reopens Tuesday August 31 with registration at 9 AM. The Herald lists students for three local public elementary schools on page 6. Students should study the lists to report to the proper classroom.
Councillor Vern Bernstrom blasted the LaRose street project at the Wednesday council meeting saying proper re zoning from M1 to R3 was not completed and warning that failure to follow town planning could cost taxpayers 1200 to 1500 a year though he did not oppose the erection of the five suite block.
The Pas teePees plan a second bus load of fans to travel to Bowsman for the first two Polar League finals games this Sunday. Local fans should contact Ticky King or Harvey Beech for fare details. The bus departs The Pas at 9 A.M.
Evans Premachuk, local barrister, urged town council last Wednesday to consider a independent trailer court operator establishing a site north of the Charlebois residence. Mayor Trager supported a properly run trailer court to ease town head aches and potentially use the land. Premachuk noted the parcel covers eleven lots and asked for land value, sewer and water installations. Council asked secretary treasurer to prepare a report on land value and utility connections for the next meeting.
The Liberal party outlines a round robin nominating convention for the Churchill federal riding to elect a candidate ahead of the general election. It spans just over a week with sessions in seven centers to cut transport costs and empower local delegates.
The Venturas from The Pas, a teenage dance orchestra, will perform In Concert at the Lido Theatre on September 1 at 7 30 P M. The program spans modern beat to old standards with on stage dance contests for audience participation and prizes for winners.
Sherritt Gordon Mines and H B M S discuss smelting Fox Lake ore at Flin Flon plant. Fox Lake ore body could boost Lynn Lake population near 400 as 000 tons annual output doubles. If talks succeed, H B M S may expand Flin Flon smelting to handle Manitoba material.
