Tom Earley was appointed Fire Chief of The Pas effective August 18, succeeding Steve Hrabarchuk who becomes Social Welfare Officer after Tom Clark left for Prince George. Council confirmed the appointments last Wednesday.
Bishop Paul Dumouchel of The Pas will leave in early September for Rome to attend the fourth and final session of the Ecumenical Conference. Rev. Father J Chaput will go to Rome in the New Year as a delegate to the conference representing Oblate Fathers. Father Rho, provincial director, will also attend as director.
A group of parents of students to attend Cranberry Portage’s new northern high school will tour the facilities tomorrow. Education officials will explain offerings and courses as delegates come from Barrows Mafeking Baden Westgate Pelican Rapids and Duck Bay along the Bay Line. The base, once part of the Mid-Canada line, is now a residential high school for northern students.
Ray Zawacky of The Pas Golf Club captured the sixth annual Open Northern Sand Green Championship at Swan River. He shot 89 on the front nine, 35 on the back, aided by an eagle on the fourth hole to secure the title.
Mr and Mrs Tom Smith celebrated a Golden Wedding Anniversary with children and relatives from Winnipeg Oakville and other城市. They received gifts of China a television set and wires and congratulations from dignitaries including J G Diefenbaker Duff Roblin J B Carroll Bud Simpson and H Trager. A reception at Jack Carroll cottage Clear Water Lake hosted by The Pas Progressive Conservative Association included tributes and presentations to the couple.
Councillor Don Gargenie told town council last Wednesday that many homeowners with newly laid sewer and water lines refuse to connect to the town system. He cited several hold-outs in new sections who favor truck-delivered water. Mayor Harry Trager called the issue serious as the council faced a looming contract deadline for water delivery.
The Pas re opens Tuesday August 31 registration at 94.M. The listing of students for three local public elementary schools is on Page 6 of this issue. Students should study the lists to report to the correct classroom.
Councillor Vern Bernstrom blasted the LaRose Street project during last Wednesday’s meeting saying proper rezoning steps were not followed to permit a five suite apartment block between Second and Third Streets. He urged following town planning or cost saving measures for taxpayers. Councillor Bermatrom clarified opposition to the project isn’t about the erection itself but the lack of formal action to prepare the site. The property reportedly needs re zoning from Mi to Ra prior to construction.
The Pas team TeePees plan another bus load of fans to Bowsman this Sunday for the Polar League finals first two games. Local fans can contact Ticky King or Harvey Beech for fare details. Bus departs The Pas at 9 A.M.
Evans Premachuk, a local barrister, urges the town to consider a independent auto trailer court on eleven lots north of the Charlebois residence. Mayor Trager welcomes a properly operated court to ease prevailing head aches. Council orders a report on land value and sewer water installations with estimated 20 000 expenditure.
The Liberal party outlines a seven center round robin nominating convention for Churchill to choose a candidate. The Winnipeg Tribune reports the plan aims to reduce travel costs and boost local delegate influence by holding meetings in seven centers over about a week, advancing a centralized yet dispersed convention strategy.
The Venturas teenage dance orchestra from The Pas will perform In Concert at the Lido Theatre on September 1 at 7 30 PM. The show will feature music from modern beat to old standards and include on stage talent contests with audience participation and prizes for winners.
Sherritt Gordon Mines and H B M S have begun talks to smelt ore from a Fox Lake mine 28 miles south of Lynn Lake. A new copper zinc ore body at Fox Lake aims to concentrate 3000 tons daily, doubling Lynn Lake’s population toward 400. If talks succeed, H B M S would enlarge Flin Flon smelter to handle Manitoba ore, plus existing Lac La Ronge and Snow Lake materials.
