The Better Start Association plans a year around program to help 60 town children unable to attend existing kindergartens. A pilot over four weeks shows promising results and a meeting is set for Tuesday August 23 at 8 PM at the M B Collegiate to review progress and discuss next steps.
The Churchill Tours expedition to Churchill, Canada, draws 70 Canadians among 500 travellers, nearly double prior years. Participants come from 26 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces. the Cornhuskers Motor Club of Lincoln led the second tour with 40 members.
Manitoba duck hunters gain an extra week in marshes and an additional duck per day. The south of the 53rd parallel will have Sept 23 to Dec 3, with a six duck daily bag and a 12 possession limit. Only one wood duck is allowed from the bag and no more than two canvasbacks or redheads per day or in possession.
The Unemployment Insurance Commission will discontinue its operations at The Pas as claimants receive benefits by mail. The minister notes modernization, with services transferred to other centers, while the federal building office remains open for the National Employment Service.
Sacred Heart School will join the public system for the 1966 67 term with 240 students and full staff. The board notes rising costs risk bankruptcy by mid next term, after historically serving 150 to 350 students yearly at no municipal cost. Policy for 1967 68 enrollment to be announced later.
A monster talent show and dance band contest will be held at the Whitney Forum Flin Flon on August 25 featuring entrants from Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Prizes entice both talent and dance bands as Rotary Club hosts a seven hour program with horticultural show at six, talent at eight, Rotary Queen crowning at ten and ball to follow.
Tenders have been invited for renovation work on The Pas Indian Day School to convert it into offices for the Indian Affairs Branch. All offices except health services will be vacated from the Fischer Avenue federal building, freeing space likely to be used by the country detachment of the R C M P.
Local cadet Patrick Booth of The Pas heads a Safety Equipment School session at CFB Borden Ontario as part of a six week Senior Leaders Course. Booth, a member of 303 The Pas Sqn, is among 240 NCOs from across Canada selected for the program with instructors including Cpl Jack Rogers of Medicine Hat and Sergeants Albert Fiola and David Leal.
The Pas town council faced a ruling by Indian Affairs Minister Arthur Laing barring sale of Indian owned land in Canada for a storage site near Keewatin. The town had earmarked 6200 for land purchase and storage prep, but funds were returned after a temporary sale order clarifies only outright sales are prohibited. The Band may lease, and bridge site plans remain unsettled with a call for reconsideration of Railway Avenue.
A second mid summer rail excursion to Chur chill sponsored by the Hudson Bay Route Association departs Saskatoon on Monday August 22. Seventy prairie residents travel via Canadian National Railways in a special railiner to The Pas with stops at Melfort Hudson Bay The Pas Flin Flon and Thompson. Churchill will host a full day of exploration before the group returns August 27.
Residents of Wabowden discuss forming a vigilante committee to halt a six month juvenile crime wave. The two man RCMP detachment covers 28 000 square miles and cannot stop thefts, vandalism, and break ins as residents demand action.
Magistrate Neil Macphee commits Gilbert Laliberty to stand trial on a charge of capital murder. The committal follows a Preliminary Hearing on August 5. The death of Ronald Ross whose body was found in The Pas River prompted the charge. Laliberty to face the Fall Assize at the Court of Queen's Bench. represented by Wr. Martin.
