The Pas has pursued a skating curling rink for almost three years. A money by law was enacted last October to fund it. A citizens committee studied feasibility, then contracted an architect for 5 000 dollars and appointed Gerry DeBeer as supervisor as construction began.
Councillor Audrey Batchlor urged council to dismiss the arena architect, while Stan Reid, chair of the overseeing committee, stated there was no doubt about the action. The Pas.
Councillor Stu Carey said the town cannot accept any tenders and must restart the process. A special meeting will bring the Winnipeg architect to discuss, while Mayor Trager lamented the figures far exceed the budget. Jack Kennedy warned heating plans may have been approached backwards, noting high electrical heat costs.
Two women from The Pas area were fined $50 each for causing a disturbance by fighting. Madaline Lathlin and Elizabeth Young pleaded guilty to fighting on Edwards Avenue before Magistrate N.G. Macphee, who warned against such behavior and imposed fines of $50 or 30 days.
