The Better Start Kindergarten group dissolves after the Kelsey School Board votes to fold the program into the public school system this fall. The annual meeting last week announced the decision and invited community input on the association's dispersal.
Dennis Popaden, pressman at THE HERALD, caught an eight pound 14 ounce pickerel last week, earning the extra weight over the Master Angler's Award. The fish broke a 25 pound test line as it neared shore, but he reeled it in despite getting a bit damp from the catch at secret fishing hole seven.
A special Town Council meeting heard that a 90 acre south side development includes a first trailer court phase. Deputy Mayor Batchelar chaired as Mayor Trager was away. Attendees included school board and planning reps, but no quorum was reached.
Mr and Mrs H F Bickford announce sale of the Gateway Drug Store and Block taJ in The Pas. The Gateway Drug business started in 1919 by Dr William Sinclair and Mrs Rye Arbuckle. The photo shows the original 1910 building and the present store in 1911 with Mrs Bickford and Arbuckle relatives.
Local Metis and Upperville Welfare officials met last week to discuss aging residents on permanent welfare facing taxi fare shortages and grocery delivery costs. Participants cited no refrigerators and lack of telephones, plus 41x dollar clothing allowances hindering winter clothing purchases and poor communication with social workers.
About 500 entries are registered for the 4th Annual Music Festival to be held May 5 to 8 at the Margaret Barrow Collegiate. The Grand Concert is set for May 6 at 7 30 p.m. in the Collegiate Auditorium with a single extra session at Mary Duncan School on May 6. Adult day session 25 to 26 cents. evening 49 cents. Student admission 25 cents. Winnipeg’s Mrs. Danielson will adjudicate speech and drama classes in place of Mrs. Ash.
Churchill Forest Industries has telegrammed The Pas objecting to the denial of a variance for a 30 unit apartment block. The company seeks 1 150 lots in The Pas Annex and asks to manage its own housing development. Town Planning rejected the variance due to insufficient parking space.
Principal Jim Fasano announces that 49 Margaret Barbour Collegiate students earned the Principals Honour Roll for term three. Honours require no failures and averages of 78 percent in grade ten 67 percent in grade twelve and 8 percent for some grades.
Last week a man introducing himself as the head of the New Start Program planned for The Pas toured the area. Chief Gordon Lathlin of The Pas Indian Band identified him as William Thomas, a treaty Indian from the Peguis Reserve, in town to assess the situation.
Last week's Town Council special meeting on Indian land development near The Pas drew criticism from attendees. Corp oration reps unhappy with the session. Town Planning members questioned attendance. councillors felt little was accomplished as key information did not arrive on time. Councillor Tawse said the plan failed to proceed as hoped due to delays, hoping future joint meetings would avoid further holdups.
Town Council and planning officials stated Ralph MacMillan of Edmonton has accepted a proposal to exchange eight acres of town land east of Centennial Park for eight acres in the Bell Subdivision, with an extra three acres donated for recreation. The council urged submission of an acceptable development plan within town limits to move the Bell Avenue project forward.
LM Thomson, district manager of the CNR, says he is interested in meeting with the Town Council in the next few weeks to discuss future development. He wants to understand the town’s plans to see how CNR operations fit in.
W. C. Cameron, municipal superintendent, pleaded guilty to having a pistol without a permit. Judge C. K. Taylor ruled there would be no fine or court costs. Crown Prosecutor W. R. Martin called the incident self explanatory and lamented lack of cooperation.
Churchill man Norman Ellis appeared in Provincial Magistrate Court on a charge of escaping lawful custody. He walked out of court April 18 while held on a breaking and entering charge. RCMP captured him April 20 on Carrot River Road after a search by air and about ten men. the charge was remanded to a later date.
The Pas resident Tom Lamb, an early settler, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Manitoba. The degree will be presented at Convocation Exercises on May 22. Lamb is one of four Manitoba residents honored and has no university degree of his own.
Lambair's Bristol freighter arrived at The Pas recently with crew Bob Shinui Dennis Nagy and Ron Davie. Onlookers at the airport examined the big plane as it landed.
