Arctic caribou protection rules eyed in mining fight
A Toronto federal court heard that new mining restrictions may shield Arctic caribou herds near Baker Lake. Maurice Ruel of the Federal department of Indian Affairs said bans or limits would apply in key calving and migration areas identified by a study. Report shows rise in bicycle motor vehicle accidents in 1977
Highways and Public Works Minister Harry Enns cites a department report finding 273 bicycle motor vehicle accidents in 1977, up from 257. Winnipeg accounted for 202 of the total. 254 were injured and three were killed. The study notes most incidents occurred at intersections and attributes the rise partly to more bikes in use.

Law Reform Commission backs equal social allowances for fathers
The Law Reform Commission presented an informal report to Attorney General Gerry Mercier urging amendment of the Social Allowances Act to grant fathers with custody the same social allowances as mothers.
