The Pas Manitoba region police report five men and three juveniles charged under the food and drug act after a raid that seized 20 pounds of marijuana. Two others faced simple possession charges as raids continued. Eight RCMP members participated with The Pas and Flin Flon in a three month probe.
The organization replies to Norman officials defending the Saskaram Wildlife Management Area near The Pas. It cites wildlife habitat goals, historical losses from Grand Rapids development, and the costs and outcomes of related water control projects. It argues that wildlife preservation cannot fully compensate for habitat lost and urges continued wildlife development rather than farmland conversion.
Snow Lake to receive a $750,000 hospital with a medical nursing unit and obstetrical facilities. The project, to be completed in 1979, aims to serve 1800 residents and support regional economic development while the province defers broader health facility construction to reduce the deficit. Surgical, obstetrical, and emergency services will be enhanced, with reliance on air transport for distant patients.
The Pas Arts Council was formed at a meeting of local performing and plastic arts groups on April 11 in Keewatin Community College cafeteria. Government reps spoke of support and coordination needs, six members were appointed, and officers elected on April 17.
In the House of Commons Cecil Smith alleges Manitoba jobs are sacrificed as Quebec students from Shawinigan used mobility grants for summer work at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting in Flin Flon. Ottawa ends Air fare subsidies while HEMS may still hire Quebec students.
The Churchill Federal Liberal Association will hold nominating meetings in Island Lake Cross Lake The Pas Flin Flon Leaf Rapids and Thompson over the next two weeks. Cy Hennessey is the only declared Liberal candidate with Jack Kennedy expected to contest in The Pas.
Mrs. J. Hurst of 240 7th Avenue reports the Block Parent Program in The Pas. On Thursday April 20 she sheltered younger boys from harassing older youths, guiding them home and separating the groups. She praises the program's效果 and impact.
Mr Smith told the House of Commons the removal of telephone service from rural post offices worsens rural life. He argued post offices are the community lifeline and farmers rely on them for seeds clothing and parcels. He linked removals to broader postal cutbacks and criticized northern Manitoba post office management.
