Early wheat seeding starts for Valley farmer Emil Jaeger
Emil Jaeger of the Carrot River Valley seeded wheat on April 13, the earliest he recalls. After 23 years of farming he notes the moisture is good and hopes for an excellent year. He recalls 1952 as the previous earliest seeding date of April 28. We’re off to a good start, he says.

Fire destroys trailer home of Mr and Mrs Garand at Valley View
April 16 fire at Valley View Trailer Court totally destroyed the Garand trailer. Mr Garand had lit the furnace before leaving briefly. neighbor alerted at 7:30 p.m. Mrs Garand and two children were away. The couple are staying with Mrs Gamache of Rahl's Island. Manitoba warns studded tires may be used only until April 30.

Unhappy union members end ten day safety walkout
Members of the International Woodworkers of America Local 1324 and the Canadian Paperworkers Union Local 1403 returned to work April 18 and 19 after a ten day safety walkout over alleged supervision of safety standards. Bill Benson said unions voted April 16 to resume work after talks set proper machine locking procedures.

Mr and Mrs Allen Kummerfield of The Pas died in a single vehicle crash at 10 50 p m Wednesday April 14 on Provincial Road 283 one fourth mile west of The Pas after their Ford Pinto left the road and plunged into the Pasquia River Curtis Hiatt of Dauphin and passenger Robert Williams also from Dauphin were hospitalized in satisfactory condition An autopsy cites drowning as the cause of death for the Kum merfields.

Daylight saving time returns to Manitoba with clocks advancing one hour on the night of April 24-25 under the Official Time Act. Uniform DST runs for six months from the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October and the change occurs at 2 a.m. Sunday, April 25, when clocks jump to 3 a.m.

The Pas Exhibition And Rodeo Plans For August
The Pas hosts its annual exhibition and rodeo August 1 and 2 at The Pas Exhibition Grounds. President Glen Thompson says attractions will appeal to all ages with show ring events for horses cattle calves sheep and other animals and new events plus traditional chuckwagon chariot flat races gymkhana wild cow milking and bucking contests. A championship trotter race is planned drawing contestants from Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Ground improvements to arena race track show ring and parking plus grandstand repairs and a new announcer stand are planned. The two busy days culminate with a mammoth parade on the second day.

Opasquia School Students Build Balsam Model Planes
About ten Intermediate pupils at Opasquia Elementary demonstrated balsam model airplanes built under Ted Rowe and Principal Bob Isfeld. The two hour weekly program since October teaches patience and problem solving, with girls making 150 Cessnas and boys making gliders, all relying on kit frames and tissue covering.
