Judge Cox signed an order allowing the State Banking Department to borrow from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to pay depositors of the closed Bank of Iron County. The petition was heard with no objections. loan terms and final payout depend on bank assets, but 40 to 45 percent may be paid soon, with prior dividends totaling 56 percent already issued.
The state urges a week long push to eat lamb from Saturday to September 14. Chambers of Commerce and civic groups back the drive to boost lamb and mutton in diets with recipes and market features, urging local families to participate to aid sheep livelihoods.
Highway patrolman L. J. Adams warns automobile owners that official inspections must be completed by September 15. Stations are at Lunt Motor Company and Arus Garage in Cedar City. Vehicles and drivers without licenses face tickets and potential fines if found driving.
County schools opened on Tuesday with a clear attendance handicap as harvest work keeps about forty percent of upperclassmen out. Despite the lack, teaching staff is strong, facilities improved, and a successful year is hoped. officials say classes should fill soon for the students’ benefit.
Director Henry Overhansley announces the Branch Agricultural College will open on Monday September 9 with anticipated record enrollment. Six new faculty join as courses align with Utah State Agricultural College, enabling Branch students to complete freshman and sophomore work locally.
After a two year recess the Utah State Fair returns with a revamped grounds and new exhibits. Exhibitors across livestock agriculture and manufacturing pledge top displays and government improvements exceed 100000 dollars including two 86000 livestock barns. The fair runs September 28 through October 5 in Salt Lake City with horse and dog shows planned and renewed entertainment features.
City council session authorized initial payments for the PWA water system improvement project totaling 10,200 to Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Co. 500 to Parawan Mercantile Co. and 260 to Cedar Lumber and Hardware Co. A labor contract payment will follow upon proper estimate. Council also voted to replace seven old hydrants at about 45 each with new units around 70 each. Mayor Marsden considered resigning but was asked to delay for 30 days.
Iron County Chapter of the American Red Cross will reorganize Monday afternoon at 4 PM in the seminary building Cedar City. Officers will be elected and will name a board of directors and department heads. A district conference is planned for October 30 under the Western division. Armistice day to Thanksgiving day will mark the annual roll call. Iron County quota is 425 this year versus 356 last year.
A successful Stake Conference in Cedar City last week ended with Elder Samuel C Bennion of the First Seven Presidents of Seventy his wife and his brother Warden Bennion in attendance representing the general church authorities. Efforts for a detailed report were hindered by stake week surveillance. Sheriff and Mrs Lu Fife attended from Cedar for part of the Fair and Race meet program.
Southern Utah Dairy Co. informs Panguitch factory owners that it will exercise option to buy the plant leased since last year. The purchase, for 3000 dollars within a year, may be financed by a major Utah daily concern with officers traveling to Payson tonight to finalize terms.
The city calls for bids to construct a 250000 gallon storage reservoir as part of water system improvements. Bids will be opened publicly on September 17 at 10 o clock. Contracts will be awarded thereafter. Plans and specifications available at the city recorder's office per the Notice to Contractors.
