Wilford Day urges formation of a pea growers organization to ensure local payroll, fair contracts, and local weighing. He notes 1935 pea harvest brought over eight thousand dollars in new money and calls for a meeting October 9 at 7 20 p m in the Court House to plan a statewide effort and irrigation improvements.
Twenty thousand small fish arrived from Gearer Fish hatchery for planting in Hendrickson Lake area. Fish were moved by state truck to the trail, then by pack horses to the lake. others released in canyon streams. Philip and Roy Benson led the pack horse transport. Forest Service and CCC crews built a new trail, and Gun and Rod Club funded lake shore timber clearing. The lake, though small, has seen fair catches but is heavily fished recently.
A management change occurred at the Utah Service Station as Freeman W. Hyatt relinquished control and the Utah O Refining Co. leased the station to Ray H. Adams who assumed duties Thursday. Company officials Mercer and Johnson spent the day guiding the transition and Hyatt’s departure.
The American Legion focal post elected new officers on Thursday night including Jasper Cartwright as Post Commander John S Mitchell as Vice Commander C W Adams as Adjutant A G B Matheson as Sergeant at Arms May D Garner as Finance Officer BE G Matheson as Chaplain and W Clair Rowley as Service Officer.
Notice calls Republicans to a primary at the Court House on Wednesday October 8 at 7 30 PM to nominate a Mayor one long term councilman three short term councilmen a recorder and a treasurer for the November 8 election. All party members urged to attend.
Director William Peterson of Utah State Agricultural College Extension explains the 1934 drought cut feed crops by as much as 69 percent and hay by over 40 percent, forcing liquidation of livestock to balance supply with scarce feed and delaying full recovery until new crops arrive.
Tarowan canyon tread will receive another $15 000 for construction this fall the amount to be used on force account with no bids or contracts. Chief engineer K Wright of the State Highway department says work will start soon after preliminary details are settled. The money must be spent near unemployment centers and cannot be allocated further now, though officials wish to fund Little Creek Bear Valley road this season.
Nominations for city officers to be voted for in November will be made at party primaries next week. Republicans meet Wednesday and Democrats on Saturday to nominate a recorder and treasurer. No candidates announced yet and incumbents may seek another term. Mayor Marsden is out of the picture.
Students recount a lively Sophomore initiation featuring porch chores, penny counts, fly catching, bike riding, and dances. A parade along Main Street followed an assembly praising talent, with voices from Lanell Robinson and Alma Mathews among performers and speakers.
The B A C school play will be presented here on October 9 in the High School auditorium. New lockers are being installed on the second floor of the High School building.
The senior class met last Friday September 37 to choose a project. Proposals included a tennis court trophy case library books and stage drapery. Committees were named for each project to determine costs.
The Swiss Alpine Ensemble will present a program of singing and readings soon. The date isn’t definite yet but the event is described as well worth your time to attend.
Seniors presented a brief assembly last Friday featuring evotional music led by June Biller and Ivy Ward, a school song under Mr. Peterson, a Chester Hatch talk, a saxophone solo by Mr. Peterson, a reading by Sheldon Clark, and a segment by senior girls.
The boys basketball class series will commence shortly and the basketball squad for the upcoming season will be chosen during the series.
CCC workers at Cedar Breaks near Brien Head Utah report a scenic road to the peak is nearly finished. An observation station will offer views across five states on clear days. The Breaks crew also built a boundary fence around Cedar Breaks National Monument and several trails. the camp will move to Zion National Park for winter.
Vermilion Castle forest camp at Five Mile in Parowah Canyon will receive new facilities including tennis and volleyball courts a baseball diamond a wading pool and more camp stores and tables. Work should start this fall and may use CCC or relief labor. The camp is noted for accessibility and beauty.
The City Council met for its regular October session with all members except Mitchell. Mayor Marsden, Attorney Morris, City Marshal Adams, and City Recorder Matheson attended as routine city business and several bills were handled. Merchants license collections were referred to the marshal to pursue delinquent payers, and the recorder was directed to order election supplies and issue a water meters payment warrant.
County Sheriff Lewis R. Fife resigns effective immediately to take a bus driving job on the Burlington route. Commission action to fill the vacancy is expected at the next regular meeting with John G. Carpenter slated as the probable appointee. Fife served in his second term and faced notable incidents during his tenure.
Mrs Howard Ward returned home from the county hospital this week after undergoing an appendicitis operation.
On a special law and motion day the District Court authorized the State Banking Department to pay a 44 percent dividend to depositors of the Bank of Iron County. Checks totaling over 46000 were issued, funded by a Reconstruction Finance loan enabling the bank to reach 74 percent payouts since its 1932 closure. Royal Kimball and bank attorneys Morris and Matheson spearheaded securing the loan. The session also covered divorce and support matters, settlements, and cases set for November term, including a few continued matters and tentative hearings.
Work progresses on a new structure replacing the flour mill that burned in April 1993. By week’s end the first story siding will be completed and the second story work will begin next week. The plan aims to have the mill ready by November.
Nemocratly party of Parowat City calls a primary at the Guurt House on Saturday evening December 12 at 7 30 for nominating a city ticket for November 5 including Mayor four year council seats two year council seats Recorder and Treasurer. Precinct Chairman W Warner Mitchell urges strong party worker turnout and other business as may come before it.
