Soldiers Farewell Set for Next Monday Night

A community farewell honors soldiers bound for military service. A program at 8 PM in the West Hall chapel features colors, salute, songs, and a post service dance in the Recreation Hall. Daryl Halterman and Alma Dalton are among those leaving, with notes on Air Force and Navy training and local families attending.

Buddys Meet in Isles of South Pacific

Two pre war buddies from Paro wan now in Uncle Sam’s forces spent a day together in the South Pacific Vern Applegate and Mark Gudmundsen. They were pals in San Juan County and Colorado ranches before the war and kept in touch by letters while serving in different branches. Both rejoined in the same South Pacific area for a reunion.

Ration-Free Shoes Soon To Be Made Available

An OP A release over the week announces ration free shoes for children up to youth size three. Obsolete shoes may be sold without rationing. refunds stamps lose the 30 day limit except for hardship cases. Gasoline rationing books will switch to five gallon coupons from December 1 to ease operations. Ruth Adams visited Salt Lake City to see Jack Halterman and his brother on their way to a school.

Scrap Paper Drive Underway in Parowan

Parowan schools launch a national scrap paper drive led by the Sindints house to house effort. Jess Guymon appeals to residents to bundle newspapers and magazines and give them to students or bring them to the school. The Parowan Mercantile will haul collected paper to Cedar City each Monday, with a two week goal for completion.

Deputy County Treasurer Leaves to Be Married

Miss Beth Matheson deputy county treasurer for six years left for Camp Forest Tennessee to marry Staff Sergeant Aaron Leigh of Cedar City. After the ceremony she will stay with him if he remains in the United States but return home if he is sent to a fighting front. Beth is the daughter of Mr and Mrs David A Matheson of Cedar City. Sergeant Leigh, son of Mrs Golds Corry Leigh, has served in the Army three years and recently left Cedar unit of the National Guard. He has been at Camp Forest for months where his unit completed maneuvers. Miss Lennie Page assists office staff in Matheson’s absence. Wr. J. Gore spent days in Salt Lake City visiting son Beverl and family and handling business matters.

Eastman Bans Christmas Vacations Amid War Effort

Joseph B. Eastman director of the Office of Defense Transportation urges government agencies and private firms to halt vacations December 17 through January 10 to avoid war traffic disruption. He asks agencies to refuse government speaker requests and stresses early shopping to relieve rail, postal, and transit bottlenecks while promoting War Bonds and Stamps.

Physician to Conduct Child Health Conference in Parowan

Local residents can secure a monthly Child Health Conference with a physician in Parowan at the Court House. The next session is on December date. Parents may bring preschool children for examination or immunization for diphtheria or smallpox by contacting Mrs. Lloyd Crawsons or calling 2580 for an appointment.

Wards Visit Son at Colorado Naval School

Mr and Mrs Rex C Ward visited here briefly during their trip from the University of Colorado at Boulder where their son Craig is in Naval Officers Training. Rex noted the trainees are put through paces but stand it. He met Ander Hyatt, son of Mr and Mrs F W Hyatt of Long Beach, former Parowan residents, who is training as a radio technician.

Theodean Heap Weds Ernest W Hight at Spring Canyon

Theodean Heap married Ernest W. Hight of Spring Canyon Utah on October 29. The ceremony was conducted by the Ward bishop as the groom, an Engineer in the U S Army, was home on furlough. The bride, Parowan High and Dixie College graduate, has worked at the Parachute Plant in Miami. plans call for her to continue there during the war until reassigned.

Citizens Must Declare Foreign Property Holdings

Citizens of Patowan owning property in foreign countries were notified by Festmaster Ivan Decker that they must file reports with the Treasury Department before December 1. A poster in the post office announced the order to gather complete information to aid military and civilian authorities. Report forms, TFR 500, may be obtained through commercial banks or the nearest Federal Reserve bank, with penalties for willful noncompliance.
