Better Speech Week Observance Urged by City Leader

Mayor J Clayton Mitchell urges all citizens to observe Better Speech Week from November 6 to 12. He calls for use of every agency to improve national speech through family, schools, churches, press, clubs, and all to promote better language. The schools will emphasize the matter during that week and seek cooperation from other groups for lasting benefit.

Halterman Secures Passenger Line on Parowan to Lund Route

At a Cedar City hearing before the Public Utilities commission on Wednesday, Halterman’s application for a passenger line over the Parowan to Lund road was favorably acted on. Farnsworth sought a truck line along the same route, but J David Leigh opposed it, and the commission took the matter under advisement, with doubts about a favorable outcome for Farnsworth.

Seismograph at Utah to Record Quakes

The University of Utah's seismograph, rebuilt after a outage, will now record shocks from almost every part of the globe and locate quake origins with accuracy. Professor Fred J. Pack notes most events originate on the Pacific coast with many from California. He is asked to write on the Elsinore quake for the Seismological Society of America journal.

An Advanced Animal Husbandry trip to Enoch viewed Holsteins at Jones and Winn Farms and will visit Beaver County Jersey herds soon. A new motion picture machine now operates with two weekly shows for the public at film-cost charges. Halloween Ball raised about $45 for a Junior Jubilee in spring. Chautauqua programs will appear during the week with two musicals and Caption T. D. Upton. Mayor Mitchell joined the Economics class today for economic discussion. Drummers and Parowan visitors noted along with Christmas card orders.

A Halloween party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Decker featured autumn decor and a center light jack o lantern. Guests included the Millers, McAllisters, Richards, Lunt, and Taylors. The evening offered games, stories, hot dogs, sandwiches, snacks, and nut tasting, concluding as a total success.

Members of the F A N club held a Halloween party at Mr. and Mrs. J H Gurr's home. Costumed guests enjoyed decorations, games, stories, and a midnight supper as Emma Clark led the program and Marian Gudmansen wore a witch costume as fortune teller.

October was favorable for outdoor work with sunshine and mild days. Two inches and three quarters of rain fell, with a mid September light frost and no killing frost until October 44th, the latest autumn frost in 30 years.

Under Ward authority the Relief Society hosts a community farewell for Brother Morgan Richards Monday night at 7:30 in the Opera House. East side guests supply sandwiches while the committee provides hot chocolate. attendees from Paragonah and Summit are invited and asked to bring nothing. The event aims for a liberal simple remembrance and all nearby residents are urged to attend.

Elder Paul Adams Returns From Mission Tour

Elder Paul M. Adams, son of James J. Adams, returns to his home city after about two years on a California mission representing the L D S Church. He reports enjoying his labors in California and Arizona and visiting Mormon colonies in Old Mexico before coming home. He shared a brief account of his experiences during a Sacrament meeting last Sunday.

A Sunday dinner at Mr. Charles Adams's home hosted Mrs. Belle Norton from Michigan, a cousin of the Adams Brothers, along with Brother Morgan Richards and other guests. Norton, visiting from Michigan, spent a month touring Northern Utah and Cedar Breaks with Adams family members and may visit California before returning home.

Lyceum concert thrills early Utah audience music scene

The Daiul Gruispet Company presented the first Lyceum show, praised for its performers Camille Plasschaert and tenor, with Corey Williamson Smith on piano.
