Parowan City Council held its regular meeting Monday night to trim insurance costs for fire and liability coverage. Bills for this year and next exceed the $2,000 budget, with recommendations to drop insurance on the race track grounds and penstock line, awaiting a special session Monday.
The 1956 MIA conference in Salt Lake City features for the first time combined arts festivals and roadshows from Sharon Utah Nyssa Oregon Parowan North Ogden Hillside Wells with four performances at Capitol Theater and Kingsbury Hall. A joint Master M Men and Golden Gleaners reception and dance on the ZCMI Parking Terrace is planned with over 2 000 expected guests. The main conference opens Friday with a Temple Square reception and General sessions in the Salt Lake Tabernacle.
The Tron County School Board decided the Parowan Elementary School building is not worth fixing. After architect’s study, remodelling was deemed too costly. The board will acquire property and build a new school on the block immediately west, with parts already purchased and contracts prepared.
The Parowan Stake Dance Festival will be held in Parowan High School gym Friday night May 18 with all wards represented. The program includes opening and closing prayers greetings by YMMIA Superintendent dances and various musical and specialty numbers featuring performers Coralee Gibson Marilyn Richardson Clark Maxwell Omah Lee Smith and others.
Parowan High School Alumni Association members vote to move the annual reunion to late August due to unavailable May date. Officers listed include Arnold Gurr as president and Clark Lamoreaux as vice. Ivy Ward as secretary and Lawana Tullis as treasurer. Board members are Florence Miller Itha Mortensen Bruce Matheson and Lollin Orton.
Iron County Court House Court Room will host a special Parowan Chamber of Commerce meeting Tuesday at 8 pm. City officials have been asked to join officials and standing committees to discuss civic problems and urged attendance by all chamber members.
Roy Orton will head the Parowan High School student body for 1956 57 with Duane Lamoreaux as vice president and Pat Urie as secretary and treasurer. Cheerleaders include Maxine Joseph Norma Lee Mercer Kathleen Barton and Gary Rollins junior cheerleaders Omah Lee Smith and Bonnie Batt.
Department biologists survey Pan guitch Lake growth condition and winter survival of trout after a chemical treatment in August and September stocking. Fall plant reached 766036 fish including 588756 rainbow 3 to 4 inches 79280 kokanee salmon 2 to 4 inches and 98000 native trout 1 to 2 inches.
Mr and Mrs G Duane Van Ausdel welcomed a baby girl born May 15 at Iron County Hospital. Ida Lowder returned from Salt Lake with her son Clarence. Mitchell traveled to Salt Lake to fetch his wife. Weekend guests at Max Hendrickson included Mr and Mrs David Hutchison, Mrs Hendrickson's parents, and sister and nephew Jarid Harris of Logan. Jay Moore visited from Bountiful to meet the Ford couple’s newborn daughter born April 24. Diane Meeks Dalton wed George D Merkley of Vernal Utah with a reception May 26 at First Second Ward Relief Society Rooms 7:30 p.m. Fred Bentley and Lou Dell Edwards visited from Provo.
Morris Rasmussen and Harvey Adams visited Salt Lake City on business last Wednesday and Thursday. Marion Loder and son from Richfield spent Sunday with Edgar Lowder. Ken Joseph and his family from Salt Lake City stayed with Arthur Joseph. Garth Whitney Dorothy Simkins and Yvonne Benson with Tov Goldrich traveled from BYU to celebrate Mother's Day with their families.
Dr Joseph V Hamilton of Provo recently visited with his wife and family then spent time in Las Veras with Mr and Mrs Lloyd Guvm on and family. Since returning from Kentucky he has established a dental practice in Provo.
Last Thursday evening Miss Sylvia Decker hosted a personal shower at Mrs. Duane Decker’s home in honor of Miss La Reta Decker, who will become Mrs. De Mar Anderson on May 25.
Mrs Grace A Tanner and her young son from Salt Lake spent last week visiting Grace’s mother Mrs Luella Adams and other relatives, sharing time with family in the area.
Mr and Mrs Wallace Hulet announce the birth of their grandson Gary Michael on May 4 to Mr and Mrs Herbert Hulet of Nepoma California.
Mr and Mrs Gary Rummler of Provo visited here with Mr and Mrs Carl Rummiler and family. 4 H Doings notes Cocketts first meeting May 14 at Norma Orton home with Alyson Adams president Sally Burt vice president Peggy Orton secretary Linda Mortensen treasurer Connie Smith reporter and Margaret Hulet song leader Norma Orton named club leader.
The Razzle Dazzle Cookers met at Mary Linda Rollins residence where they prepared glazed apples. Club officers include Sandra Decker president Vic Miller vice president Sandra Les Orton secretary Linda Folins reporter Linda Ann Stubbs song leader Norda M Sarton club leader. Next meeting will be at Sandra Decker's.
Milford Utah hosts a two day 49er celebration featuring a mayoral horse race on May 26 judged by Gov. J Bracken Lee and columnists Dan Valentine and Ted Cannon. Mayors may race any Utah owned horse over a quarter mile, with a handsome trophy. Festivities include six other races each day plus gymkhana events, parade, dance, comic band, free chuckwagon breakfast, children’s races, bathing beauty contest, and 49er queen crowning.
Miss Betty Petersen of Parowan High School will leave to teach at Ricks College as a Secretarial Science instructor. She will begin her new duties in the fall.
Parowan High School purchased an outstanding painting titled Man and the Horse by Salisbury from the recent Cedar City art exhibit. The work, valued at $300, is described as one of the better pieces on display.
Parowan High School P T A sponsors a breakfast and program in the Home Economics Room for all seniors their partners and parents after the graduation dance. The party runs from 1 to 2 am with parents leading the program and food provided.
Principal Mr Dalley announces the graduation dance will follow exercises in the Third Ward Chapel. Boyd Mitchell and his orchestra provide music for the final social event of the school year. Juniors hosted Seniors at the Five-Mile on Friday with games supper and a campfire program.
Iron County commissioners appoint registration agents for most voting districts based on last general election votes. Summit and four districts not named due to split or pending issues. Cedar City and Parowan districts listed with named agents. Beaver Valley cattle sale negotiations and water well plans noted. Equalization dates set. coal land sale offer rejected at $19 per acre, accepted at $15.
The fish and game department reports a serious winter loss of trout at Navajo Lake as ice clears. Early shoreline counts show nearly 10 000 dead trout with a risk of higher totals. Low water and a long winter freezeover are blamed. The lake was chemically treated in 1954 to remove trash fish and restocked with trout a year ago, improving angling until now.
A survey will assess trout losses in a lake with possible pre opening restocking before June 9. It marks the second lake in the area with winter trout losses, following Pine Lake in Garfield County. If very low water persists in Southern Utah, both summer and winter losses may continue next year.
Homer Adams State Drive or License Examiner will be at the Court House in Parowan on Monday May 21 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. All drivers who want to take the examination may do so at that time.
