Idaho seed arrives at Cedar freight depot in three loads for local growers. Planting begins around the 15th under contract to supply 125 bags per acre at $1.20 per bag delivered to the railroad. a chata culture specialist will oversee seed treatment. Growers include Day Farms Co and listed individuals.
The Cedar City Choral Society directed by W. J Manning gave a strong concert last Thursday evening. Brought by the Parent Teachers association the event closed their year's activities with ticket sales aiding proceeds, though finances limited audience attendance. The performance earned praise and an invitation for a return engagement.
Plans are finalized for the District MLA miser event in Cedar City on Saturday May 10. Contests start at 10 06 a m at the BL A C with participants from five states in Southern Utah and one Nevada stake. Stages include public speaking music drama storytelling and dancing with no entry fee and a final in Salt Lake City June 5 and 6. Stake participants Beaver Parowan Zion Park St George Kanab and Moapa expected. drama features four one act plays. Public urged to join and support the Cedar City day expected attendance around one hundred participants.
A meeting of all Legionaires of Post No 20 is called for Wednesday May 14 at 8 pm in the Library basement. Officer notice lists important matters to be considered and urges full member attendance.
Cedar City records show a deed of the cemetery land to J. K. Thorn of Salt Lake City, with the Cedar Milling Co as slow to record and the transfer tied to a disputed move involving the town’s corporate limits and Main Street alignment. Abstractor N. C. Parcells notes the deed was recently granted for the cemetery occupying land, raising questions if tied to a broader development plan or a recording error.
The Beaver School District reports heating costs declined after upgrading to a stoker plant and finer coal. Previously one building cost about 1800 to 2000 dollars yearly, while two buildings used about 1200 to 1400 dollars this season. Beaver High School heating dropped from 2760 to about 2300 dollars due to improvements.
Forest Ranger Frank Seaman reported work in the canyon on the road to the new camp. He directed crews to complete the route in good condition even if it costs more than planned, saying the Forest Service will stretch funds to finish the job. The improvement runs from the nuisance to first jet-hand canyon up to the camp.
President Relinda M. Adama of West Ward Relief Society announces an annual Ward conference on Sunday May 11 with a year report and officer elections. A social and birthday celebration follow on May 13. All West Ward members are invited. Edith Whitney recovering after surgery.
Director Henry Oberhansley of B A C will address the 1930 graduates at Parowan High School tonight in the third school gym. The class is the largest yet with thirty graduates led by valedictorian Florence Decker, daughter of M M Decker.
A temporary Navy recruiting substation opened in Parowan on the second floor of the County Courthouse to serve the district. Commander Guther’s Mate l Mr W McGovern will head the office, open weekdays nine to four, inviting locals to apply for enlistment or seek naval information.
At the May meeting Parowan representatives Nessra J Fenton and Witford Day R urged the council to locate a site for a county fair. They proposed adjoining Rambouillet show ground as a potential race course and said property could be bought at a reasonable figure. The audit committee was tasked to study all costs and report back soon.
A prolonged cold damp spell ended with a severe frost causing heavy damage to crops and livestock. Alfalfa and other crops are badly damaged and newborn lambs are dying or struggling to survive. Sheep in lambing season face significant losses as lambing operations are delayed.
Perowan High School alumni association held its usual banquet and ball on Thursday night. The Bellet Society served the banquet. W. Scott Day presided. Officers for the coming year: Long Pendleton president, Marlo Topham vice president, Claude Orton secretary and treasurer, Florence Decker historian. The ball was a social and financial success. The Parowan Literary Club hosted Mrs. J. B. Adams in Provo and presented a book of short plays as a token.
At a regular meeting the Iron County School District board declined two funding requests. The Purowan Chamber of Commerce sought 100 dollars to match a local grant for band and orchestra work. A committee including William R Kalmer Henry Oberhansley and Oscar A Kirkham asked board support to hire a coordinator for scouting and school programs. The board deemed both proposals meritorious but not timely for expansion and rejected them.
Local committee invites boys aged 12 to 17 to try out for the African Legion Junior baseball program. A practice game between the fast and West sides is set for Saturday at 2 PM at the baseball diamond to form two age groups. Teams will include Scipio Delta Fillmore Milford Seiver Cedar City and St George for the season.
Preliminary population figures for Cedar City show a fifty percent increase over ten years. City proper counts 3682 residents now, up from 1442 in 1929, with the Cedar Valley and Hamilton's Fort precinct totaling 3847 versus 2567. Mr and Mrs Victor Watkins plan a temporary Salt Lake City move for summer work.
Ir Mr. CL Curran, business builder and psychologist, addressed the Inglewood Lions Club urging local businesses to invest in advertising. He argued newspapers grow with advertising and that strong communities rest on religion, banks, schools, and churches, urging persistent outreach.
Robert Jones from Weber High School spoke at Parowan High School on The Future of the American Farmer. He aims to boost cooperative buying and selling for stable growth in agriculture. Accompanied by Glen Walke of Wyoming, both spoke at Cedar City and Phoenix events ahead of a Western States final.
The court seeks the whereabouts of 750 bond money posted to secure Arthur Brown for a prohibition case. Brown vanished after release. Bondsmen claimed varying sums and cash bonds, with no court record of payment or receipt, leaving the county treasury questionably funded.
Judge Cox held a brief District Court session. Archie Gregory received a thirty day stay of execution ending Oct twenty first to adjust affairs. The court ruled in Little v Burt that defendants must satisfy the contract by Oct 20 1930 or risk possession. Graff v Graff ordered $160 attorney fees and $190 monthly during litigation. Leonard Bleak was committed to the mental hospital in Provo.
Mothers Day will be observed nationwide on Sunday May 11 by Sunday Schools in Far Ewin wards. Each ward will carry out programs outlined in the Juvenile Instructor with tokens and flowers for mothers. All mothers are invited to attend.
An evening auto crash near La Verkin leaves Miss An Corry of Cedar City seriously injured with multiple fractures. Four others including Ramona Brynest and Lowman of Cedar, Vic Gargin and Foy Gillespie suffer various injuries. Frank Matheson escapes with minor harm. The group was en route to La Verkin bathing resort when the vehicle struck a concrete bridge and overturned into the wash. They were taken to the county hospital for treatment.
Gwendolyn Bijelke filed for divorce from Donald Fjelke in district court within the week. The suit charges non support and seeks custody of a minor, ban alimony of 30 dollars per month, 75 dollars in attorney fees, and restoration of maiden name Gwendolyn Bulloch. No other suits filed that week. Attorney Wm M Shaywaner from Cedar City reported in on business.
