Whitney To Head County Red Cross Drive in Iron County

Gaylord Whitney named Iron County Red Cross Drive chairman with Golda Guyman as community chair. Quota set at 3460, up 500 from 1955, split across Cedar City, Parowan, Paragonah, Kanarraville, Newcastle, Summit, Modena, Beryl, Lund, Enoch, and Midvalley. Local funds fund blood, home nursing, first aid stations. Iron County contributed to eastern seaboard relief and maintains three stations. Citizens urged to cooperate when contacted.

Dalton Named Southern District Mother of the Year

Luella A Adams Dalton 66 of Parowan named Mother of the Year for the Southern District by Utah Federated Women's Clubs in a decision by impartial judges from nominations across Beaver Iron Washington and Garfield Counties. CSU to Host Region Four Junior College Tournament

Four teams meet in Cedar City March 9 and 10 to choose a regional representative for the national junior college tournament in Hutchins Kansas. Boise and CSU are solid contenders with Oregon likely to accept. The event, previously held at Weber, will award trophies and individual honors during playoffs as announced by A W Stephenson and the CSU Intercollegiate Athletic Council.

Last Rites Held For Samuel J. Whitney

Funeral services were held Thursday in the Third Ward Chapel for Samuel J. Whitney who died Monday at Iron County Hospital. Speakers included Dr. J. S. Prestwitch and Will L. Adams. Music featured quartets and trios, with Itha Mortensen on piano. Pallbearers were Alma Bettridge Philip K. Smith Morgan Slack Eugene Orton and Robert Benson.

Newly Weds Honored At Reception

A Parowan reception honored newlyweds Mr and Mrs Rodney Prisbrey after their February wedding at the St George LDS Temple. The bride Sharon Holyoak and groom Deloy Prisbrey planned to reside in Cedar City. Numerous family members attended, with attendants named and flowers described. Rams Topple Beaver Seals Parowan State Tourney Berth

By Dale Robinson the Rams beat Beaver 59 45 in Parowan securing a berth in the State Class B Tournament. Standouts were Stubbs Simkins Whitney and Mitchell as Parowan led 33 25 at halftime and pulled away in the second half. Goldie Adams led Beaver with 14 points while Easton had 13. The Rams, top of the Millard Division, face Cedar Redmen for the Region Six title March 9 10. they travel to Provo March 13 for a BYU Fieldhouse opener on March 14.

World Book Encyclopedia Gift To Parowan Elementary

Iron County School District received a nineteen volume World Book Encyclopedia set with a steel mobile stand as a gift from Utah Copper Division, Kennecott Copper. The set will be placed at Parowan Elementary to address a long standing library need and is part of a $5,000 statewide school aid grant allocation to each district including St. Marys of the Wasatch. Superintendent Wright noted each district will choose the recipient school. The gift page states the aim to enrich education and citizen skills for a modern America.

Third Ward Relief Society March Meeting Planned

The Third Ward Relief Society will hold a special March meeting on Sunday evening March 4 at 7 pm in the Third Ward Chapel. The theme is Search We The Scriptures with special musical numbers by the singing Mothers and all are invited to attend.

The Parowan City Recreation Committee will convene on Monday March 5 at 8 p.m. in the courthouse to outline a five year program. All clubs and organizations are urged to send representatives for this planning meeting.

Bennett Sees Promise of Major Utah Park Improvements

Senator Wallace Bennett announced after meetings with National Park Service leaders that Utah parks will get short and long term development. About 1.5 million dollars is allotted this year with a 10 year plan for roads visitor centers campgrounds and facilities. Plans include making Zion National Monument part of Zion National Park and advancing Dinosaur National Monument with new visitor center housing water and sewer work and a service road in the quarry area.

The MIA Drama Committee announces the 1956 Playwriting Competition open with a September 30 deadline. Four classes including a Young Writers Section accept manuscripts. Prizes range from 50 to 300 dollars based on rating. rights to publish go to the MIA Book of Plays.
