Dam in Danger as Meadow Reservoir Level Rises

Forest Engineer and Mayor warned Monday night that the dam forming Meadow Reservoir nears saturation with rising water. Officials reported four to five inches rise in four days, added dirt at the top, and urged concrete reinforcement of the outlet access and a spillway to prevent failure. Water releases were ordered to lower the level toward safety while talks continued with field and city officials.

Jubilie in Cedar City for 12 County Pioneers event

Francell Corry announces the Daughters of the Pioneersof Watson in Leon County will hold the annual jubilee for the 12 County camps of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers on Thursday June 24 in Cedar City Third Ward. The program includes rehearsals led by Master Weight and band, with instruction for housemembers and plans for later performances in Nevada and Kansas events.

Court to Convene Here Next Monday In Criminal Terms

A special term of the District Court will convene here next Monday to hear two criminal cases postponed at the last term. The State of Utah vs R. S. Askes faces assault with a deadly weapon, and the State of Utah vs Ernest Murte covers damaging and destroying property in Cedar City jail. A jury of ten was drawn last term and will be called again Monday morning for trial. A low and motion day term will begin at 2 o clock this afternoon.

Young Couple Married in 81 at St George Temple

Misa Afton Adams of Parowan and Harris C Robinson of Paragonah now Los Angeles were wed Wednesday in the St George temple. They visited Parowan and Paragouah after arriving from California and will return home to California. Relatives hosted a reception for about seventy five from the Adams and Robinson families.

KSUB to Open With Southern Utah Opening Night

Southern Utah residents will soon hear a new station, KSUB, broadcasting from Cedar City. Open date is June 17 with a simulcast planned with KSL and KSL Radio in Salt Lake City, featuring local talent and a dance to be broadcast live. Station staff includes Robert Burton as manager, Archie Madsen as chief engineer, and Cutler Miller as chief announcer.

Utah Game Club Fails To Materialize

At a meeting of several Southern Utah Fish and Game clubs in Denver last Sunday the proposal to form a Southern Utah Fish and Game Association was rejected. Club leaders favored existing groups and outings instead, pledging support for Cedar City Cedar’s July 4 5 event at Navajo Lake and other clubs events. State Gate Commissioner Newell Cook and Utah Sportsmen’s Association member Chick Evans spoke, answering questions. The group also toured the Beaver Fish and Game Hatchery before continuing with personal travel to Salt Lake City for medical and family purposes.

Legion Auxiliary Hold Utah District Convention at Vermilion Forest Camp

Legion and Auxiliary units of Parowan Post No 20 hosted the 7th District American Legion convention at Vermilion Castle Forest Camp. About 175 delegates gathered for memorial ceremonies, department meetings, and reports, then joined a community banquet with talks, a mixed quartet, a campfire program, and a grand ball. Several officers were elected for the coming year and others to be appointed later.

43 Club Boys Exhibit Sheep at Stock Show

George Malterman and Clyde Bryant, two 411 club boys from the Mid Valley Sheep club, exhibited fat lambs at the Inter Mountain Junior Fat Stock Show in Salt Lake City. Led by Gene Halterman, each boy displayed 25 head of suffolk lambs, a pin of three fat lambs, and an individual fat lamb, with exhibits to be sold through the auction ring at show’s end.

Prominent People To Be At Navajo Outing

Two day Navajo Lake outing on July 4 and 5 will be sponsored by the Cedar City Fish and Game Protective Association and civic groups. Notables include Senator Homer T. Bone and Governor Henry H. Blood as guest speakers. The program features dedication of the Brian Head road, archery contests, aquaplane demos, band concert, campfire, dance, and playground sports.

Painter Contributes Painting to Forest Fire Prevention

James Montgomery Plage, noted painter, donated an original painting to the United States Government for forest fire prevention. The work, showing Uncle Sam in Forest Ranger uniform, will be formally accepted by President Roosevelt, exhibited in Washington, then toured nationally including Utah and Massachusetts. The painting echoes Plage’s war cartoon I Want You, once widely distributed by the government. the original now rests in the Smithsonian.

Iron County School District Adopts Budget totals $203922.30

The Iron County School District adopted a budget of 203922.30 for the fiscal year starting July 1. The plan shows 158860 for school operations, 214000 for debt service and capital outlay combined, with operating costs rising due to twelve month salaries and planned staff increases. The board reappointed Superintendent N. J. Batlow for two more years and approved several teaching contracts and transportation bids.

Fishing Season Opens Tuesday June 15

The state announces the fishing season begins Tuesday morning June 16 with lakes and streams across the area opening for angling. Panguitch Lake Yan Kea reservoir Nayalo Lake and local high elevation creeks will be open with some Pasquard Lake runoff streams closed. Hatcheries are stocking beams with thousands of legal game fish. Beaver and other hatcheries supply fish for Navajo Lake Paragawah reservoir and Yankee reservoir. Panguitch Lake is being prepared by the Panguitch Fan and Game Club for better fishing. Local officials discuss tax assessment legislation at a Legislative committee meeting.
