Adobe Walls Battle Fought by 29 Frontiersmen
Sixty years ago this month the Adobe Walls clash began on June 27 1874 when 600 700 warriors from Comanche Kiowa Cheyenne Arapaho and Kiowa Apache attacked a buffalo hunter camp on the Canadian River in present day Hutchinson County Texas Panhandle. The defenders led by Jim Shephard Billy Dixon and others repelled repeated charges with buffalo guns suffering few casualties while the attackers failed to wipe out the camp. A final monument on the Adobe Walls site memorializes the 28 named frontiersmen who fought there plus the two Shadler brothers and Willem Gids marked graves nearby.
