Summer music courses begin Monday at 3 o clock in the High School music room with no charge. Students need an instrument and music book. If lacking instruments, obtain one now. Schedule lists multiple instrument groups across Mon Thu Tue Fri Wed with times from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. for violins, cellos, clarinets, saxophones, flutes, horns, trombones and more.
Twenty four Parowan East Ward Scouts joined Utah National Parks Council groups at Lake Meade camp near Overton Nevada for five days of swimming boating fishing hiking and campfire programs led by Scoutmasters and council officers. The group traveled by truck with Ancel J Adams and planned future camps across Utah including Boulder Mountain. Mrs Gurr underwent neck surgery in Salt Lake City with multiple large cysts removed. she is recovering.
Harry Empey, a Salt Lake City native and former Parowan resident, has earned a $500 scholarship to New York University. He will attend in the fall after graduating from the University of Utah with strong academic and athletic records. He previously attended Parowan High School and South Side High School in Salt Lake City.
Pendletons plan to return home about mid June after a winter in Ames Town where Mr Pendleton studied at Iowa State College and completed his thesis on Adult Education as a Factor in Todays arts. Hazel Pendleton and family thank readers, note university honors for Empey and Hatch, and mention visits and party farewells in Parowan and Cedar City.
Parowan FFA members Robert Rowley and W Clair Howley join Hugh Robinson and Cato Robinson of Faragonah to attend the Intermountain Jur Pat Stock Show June 7 8 in Salt Lake City with two baby beeves. Ray Garner chapter advisor travels with the group. Rowleys Hereford aged 17 18 months weighs 930 pounds May 27 with a 305 pound gain since December. Robinsons Short horn steer about one year old weighed 488 pounds December and 840 pounds May 31. Both calves on feed six months and expected to contend in weight classes. sale bidding June 9 could boost town meat advertising.
M J Urie a Cedar City leader was chosen by Gov Blood to fill the late Dr M J Macfarlane spot on the Utah State Agricultural College board at Logan. The appointment echoes southern Utah representation and unanimous local approval. Nearby, Claude Adams of Panguitch and family visited Cedar City with relatives while planning for Claude to study at UC Santa Barbara. Gardello Orton and family from Boulder City Nevada visited Cedar City, with health concerns prompting plans for treatment in Los Angeles. Lolin Orton and family prepared for summer work at Bryce Canyon and bus driving duties for Utah Parks Co.
The Iran County School Board will hold its first June meeting next Monday to fill the vacancy left by Janet Hole as Clerk and to consider options on local high school athletic field property. Eight Cedar City applicants are definite and others are mentioned, including S. J. Foster and Reed Esplin, with several Cedar City residents tied to the list. Options on land owned by Decker, Topham, Thornton, Clark and Halterman near the school grounds are to be acted upon for the athletic field.
The three day Junior Fat Stock show begins June 5 with the checking stand and sifting committees evaluating 455 boys and girls plus 80 FFA chapters and 411 clubs across five states. About 455 baby beeves 150 lambs and 255 hogs will compete. 33 percent more participants than last year. The formal opening is June 7 at Union Stock Yards with Governor Blood and other officials present. Hog judging leads by Professor H H Smith while lamb judging starts later. auctions by J H Adams and C E Adams headline final day. Exhibitors are urged to train daily for show time and meet requirements.
Mrs Wm J Lowder announces the marriage of their daughter Laurel to Bernhard Specht of Long Beach California. The ceremony was conducted Monday night at the Lowder Nome by Bishop W L Adams with the bride's immediate family present. The couple planned to live in Long Beach after a brief Wyoming visit. Laurel, a local graduate of the May 1937 class, has spent much time in California. Specht, a Long Beach resident, works for Procter and Gamble.
Announcement by Superintendent Paul R. Franke states all roads within Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks and Cedar Breaks National Monument and approach highways to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park are open and in good condition. Snow removal on Cedar Mountain to Cedar Breaks is complete and the ground is snow free. Utah Parks Company Lodges offer a full summer schedule with free camp grounds and cabins. A vivid display of native wildflowers in Zion, including prickly pear and beaver-tail cacti, columbine and purple torch, draws out-of-state visitors as travel to these parks increases toward a record year.

John A Garner and Hexburg Idaho visitor with their son Ray D. Garner.
A fragment notes that finalists earn top status by making an outstanding demonstration of their ability in the regular classes in which they show their animals. The emphasis is on practical skill shown during standard judging rather than separate showmanship events.
Water was released from Yankee Reservoir to aid farms and town lots amid a prolonged drought. Three to four second feet were discharged yesterday, with the reservoir near its 2 year high. dam improvements continue and plans aim to divert Dark Hollow creek into the reservoir this summer.
John F. Orton and Lydia Stevens wed last Saturday in the L D S temple at St George. The couple, prominent West Ward church workers, received congratulations from friends and relatives. They were driven to St George by Mrs Lori C Warner of Couury and accompanied by Mr and Mrs George Stevens. A social in their honor is planned for Tuesday evening June 6 at their home.
Jona H. Prothere, 85, longtime Paragonah resident, died Wednesday night at Iron County Hospital after a brief illness. He was admitted Tuesday and died shortly after. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon in the Paragonah Ward chapel with further life details in next week’s issue.
The Parowan Exchange Club holds its regular semi monthly luncheon at Taylor's Cafe next Monday noon. All members should attend. Cedar City residents who visited Friday evening for graduation included Mrs Do Bowman and Grace, Mr and Mrs Lawrence Lowder, Mrs Maurine Wade, Mr and Mrs Monte Bensot and family, Mr Thomas Stapley, and School Board members Rolce Nelson and W H Leigh. Mr and Mrs George Litchfield of Milford visited Memorial Day with relatives.
